This one’s close to my heart 💛

In addition to my speech therapy work, I also run Copper Sky Academy — a structured literacy microschool in Scottsdale. Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference, which is part of why it falls squarely within my scope as an SLP — and it’s also personal. My own son has dyslexia, and watching him move through his struggles with reading alongside so many of his peers is a huge part of why this school exists.

Today, those same kids are strong, capable readers — many working above grade level — and they’re ready for their next phase: middle school. We’re hiring a Middle School Teacher to lead them into it, with advanced, structured content and room for real project-based learning.

A week of hands-on creative experience that gave kids something screens never can — the feeling of making something real, learning something hard, and sharing it with people they love.

Halfway through camp today — the room went completely quiet.

Not because anyone asked them to. Because their nervous systems were regulated.

But here’s what happened next: they started talking to each other.

Authentic conversation. Spontaneous communication. Kids who sometimes struggle to connect — suddenly connected, side by side, making something together.

This is what happens when you give kids something to do with their hands. Bilateral coordination, fine motor engagement, sensory input — all working together to bring the brain into a state where learning and connection are actually possible.

You don’t need a therapy room to create a regulating experience. And you don’t need a structured activity to spark real communication. Sometimes you just need clay, paint, and a magic wand. 🪄✨

Happy Day 1 of Camp Social! 🪄✨

Behind the scenes last night, we were setting the stage, organizing the props, and yes—putting in the work on cape-steaming duty to make sure our campers look the part today! 😎🎩

Our core lineup of tricks is locked in, the campus is ready, and we cannot wait to welcome our bright, amazing group of kids through the doors this morning for a week of confidence-building, breakthrough moments, and true fun.

Year 2 of Camp Social officially starts TOMORROW! 🪄✨

We are behind the scenes today getting the campus ready, setting the stage, and yes—even steaming the capes for our campers!
Last year, the kids absolutely loved putting together their magic line-up and performing for their friends and family at the end of the week. They were so incredibly proud of what they built, and I can’t wait to see that same magic happen again starting tomorrow morning.

🛑 CAMP UPDATE: Week 1 of Camp Social is officially SOLD OUT! 🪄✨

Tomorrow, we kick off Year 2 of Camp Social at Copper Sky Academy, and our first theme is Magic & Illusion . While our first group of campers is locked in, I wanted to pull back the curtain on why a Speech-Language Pathologist would design an entire camp week around magic.

To the outside eye, a magic show is just a cute summer activity. But through a clinical lens, mastering a magic trick is a absolute goldmine for complex neurodiverse learners:

🧠 Executive Functioning & Sequencing
Learning a trick requires a child to internalize, organize, and execute a precise multi-step procedure. It relies heavily on working memory and cognitive flexibility.

✋ Motor Planning & Dysgraphia Support
Manipulating props, sleight of hand, and managing materials build fine motor precision and motor planning in a highly engaging, functional context.

💬 Pragmatics & Narrative Language
To pull off an illusion, you have to tell a story. Campers must practice perspective-taking (what does my audience see?), volume control, body language, and verbal timing to successfully deliver their narrative script to an audience.

Traditional environments often mistake our kids' processing differences for behavioral challenges . But when you build the environment around the child, the anxiety drops and true competence takes center stage.

🗓️ WHAT'S NEXT: While our Magic week is at capacity, we have limited spots remaining for the other 8 weeks of specialized themes (including Superhero Training, Jurassic Quest, and Science Experiments)! We cap our enrollment at 10 children per day/week to preserve our elite, ultra-low clinician-to-student ratios.

25 years as a speech-language pathologist. 30 years working with neurodiverse learners. I know how these kids think, learn, and grow.

But it was my own son who taught me that knowing isn’t enough. You have to build something.

So I did.

Copper Sky Academy started with 2 students in 2023. This year we had twenty — every one of them a kid whose brain just needed the right environment to shine.

Our 2025–2026 yearbook just arrived and I can’t stop looking at it. Twenty faces. Twenty families who said yes to something different.

This is why I do what I do. All of it. 🥹🖤

From a mother’s "Why" to a room full of blooms. 🐝🌸

When I started Copper Sky Academy, it was born out of a necessity that many of you know all too well. I was a mom advocating for my son, searching for a place where he could truly flourish.

Looking at these kids today at our Bloom Bar, I was struck by the full-circle beauty of it all. These moms are my heroes. I know the weight they carry, the "invisible" work of advocacy, and the exhaustion that comes with unconditional love.

A huge thank you to my warm and talented friend, Aarica, and her floral designer, Alan, for helping our students create these gorgeous bouquets.

Watching these kids hand a piece of their heart to their moms—the women who fought for them to have this space—is exactly why I do what I do.

Happy Mother’s Day to the advocates, the fighters, and the queens. You are seen.

Three years ago, my son was the "Why." Today, he is the "How." 🧡✨

As a speech-language pathologist and advocate, I know that finding a learning environment that is both safe and expert-driven is the ultimate goal. When I founded Copper Sky Academy, that was the vision—and it’s our teachers who have brought that vision to life every single day since.

This past Sunday, my son helped me decorate the school to kick off Teacher Appreciation Week. Seeing him stand there, pointing to that banner, was a powerful reminder of how far he’s come and how much this community has grown. 🎈

To our Copper Sky educators: You are the experts who understand our kids' unique needs and the mentors who make them feel they truly belong. We are forever grateful for the heart and the science you bring to the classroom.
