Due to the spillover of infectious agents and parasites from wildlife and parasites in dogs and other domestic

animals into human populations by a wide variety of environmental exposures, PCI has the expertise in all these biological systems because of Dr. Amin’s broad zoological experience and research history in Africa, the middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Established in 1994, PCI is a facility that has excellent national and international reputation as one of the best, if not the best, parasitology laboratory in the country. How a Healthy Gut Helps Fight Inflammation

Inflammation is one of the body’s built-in defense responses. When you get an infection or injure a tissue, the immune system uses inflammation to protect the body and start repair. The problem is not inflammation itself. The problem is when inflammatory activity becomes excessive, poorly regulated, or long-lasting. Persistent inflammation has been linked with a wide range of chronic health concerns, which is one reason researchers keep paying close attention to the factors that help regulate it. One of the most important of those factors is the gut.

The Gut-Immune System Connection Explained

Most people think of the gut as the part of the body that breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and moves waste out. That is true, but it is only part of the story. The digestive tract is also a major site of immune activity, and the gut microbiome plays an important role in how immune responses are developed and regulated. Harvard’s Nutrition Source notes that the gut is a major site of immune activity and antimicrobial protein production, while NIDDK explains that bacteria in the large intestine help break down remaining nutrients and contribute to normal digestive function.

Common Parasites That Affect Human Health

Parasites are a fact of human biology, travel, food systems, and sanitation, not just something people imagine after reading one alarming post online at 1 a.m. In simple terms, a parasite is an organism that lives on or inside a host and gets its food at the host’s expense. The CDC groups human parasites into three broad categories: protozoa, helminths, and ectoparasites. Some mainly affect the digestive tract, while others can involve the skin, blood, muscles, eyes, or nervous system.

10 Signs Your Gut Microbiome May Be Out of Balance

At PCI Wellness, we see gut health as a core part of whole-body wellness. Your gut microbiome is the community of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes that live in your digestive tract. In a healthy state, this ecosystem helps with digestion, nutrient use, immune function, and normal communication between the gut and the brain. Researchers describe gut dysbiosis, or microbiome imbalance, as a loss of balance and variety in this microbial community.

Signs Your Body May Benefit from a Digestive Reset

A "digestive reset" does not need to mean an extreme cleanse or a harsh short-term program. In practical terms, it usually means stepping back from habits that may be straining digestion and returning to habits that support normal gut function, such as getting enough fiber, drinking enough fluids, eating more minimally processed foods, and paying attention to bowel regularity. That approach is much more consistent with mainstream digestive health guidance than the idea that the body needs dramatic detoxing. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that evidence for commercial detoxes and cleanses is limited and that some can be unsafe.
