When was the last time you went outside without immediately reaching for your phone?
We spend so much of our day connected — texts, emails, social media, work, news, appointments, and an endless stream of notifications.
But our brains and bodies also need periods of lower stimulation.
As a physician, I talk a lot about nutrition, hormones, metabolic health, gut health, sleep, exercise, and lab optimization. But some of the most important foundations of health are also the simplest.
Getting outside is one of them.
Outdoor time can naturally encourage movement, provide light exposure that helps regulate our circadian rhythm, and give us an opportunity to step away from the constant mental stimulation of our devices.
And it doesn’t need to mean hiking for two hours or completely changing your schedule.
Take your morning coffee outside.
Walk for 10 minutes without your phone.
Sit in the sunshine for a few minutes.
Watch the sunset.
Go for a walk and leave your headphones at home.
Pay attention to what you see, hear, and feel around you.
Small moments of slowing down can become an important part of taking care of yourself.
We often think improving our health means adding more — more supplements, more workouts, more testing, more things on the to-do list.
Sometimes what we really need is less.
Less noise. Less stimulation. Less screen time.
And a little more time outside simply being present.
