The Adventure Group took on the Optical Illusion Museum in Arizona, and our brains may never recover. From rooms that made us look upside down to mind-bending exhibits that had everyone questioning reality, every corner was packed with laughs, photos, and plenty of “wait… how is that possible?” moments.

Some of us became instant detectives, while others fully embraced the confusion and just enjoyed the experience. Between the interactive displays, group challenges, and nonstop laughs, this was the perfect reminder that adventure doesn't always mean hiking a mountain or traveling far away—sometimes it's about seeing the world from a completely different perspective.

In the fall of 2023, I moved to San Francisco to begin my practicum, working within the shelter system alongside individuals experiencing severe mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and transgender women living with AIDS. The work was new to me, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. What I did have, however, was a deep desire to help others and an ability to connect with people whose life experiences were very different from my own.

Very quickly, I learned that the shelters where I worked functioned much like families. There were natural hierarchies, helpers who stepped up to support others, and individuals who needed extra care and attention due to their unique needs. Guests held one another accountable, and like any family system, there were disagreements, apologies, and moments of repair. Everyone played a role, and each person’s behavior affected the people around them.

Families and communities are living systems that require flexibility and compassion as they adapt to meet the needs of each member. While we all need a sense of independence and personal agency, true growth happens when...

The Benefits of Positive Psychology 🌱

Positive psychology isn’t about ignoring challenges — it’s about focusing on what helps us thrive. Here’s how it can transform your mindset and well-being:

✨ Encourages a Commitment to Health
By focusing on growth, resilience, and meaningful goals, positive psychology helps people take an active role in improving their mental and emotional health.

💪 Focuses on Strengths
Instead of obsessing over flaws, positive psychology highlights what makes you unique, capable, and powerful. Your strengths deserve attention too.

🤝 Improves Relationships
Learning to recognize positivity in yourself and others can lead to stronger, healthier, and more supportive relationships.

🚫 Minimizes Fear of Failure
When self-worth comes from within — not external validation — failure feels less overwhelming and more like part of the journey.

🧠 The PERMA Model of Well-Being
Developed by Martin Seligman, the PERMA model outlines 5 pillars of flourishing:

🌟 Positive Emotions — joy, gratitude, hope
🎯 Engagement — being fully present in the moment
❤️ Relationships — feeling loved and supported
🌍 Meaning — having purpose and direction
🏆 Accomplishment — achieving goals and growing through challenges

Positive psychology reminds us that thriving isn’t about being perfect — it’s about building a life rooted in purpose, connection, and growth. 🌿

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to the idea of helping people understand themselves and their relationships. As I was going into my sophomore year of high school, I had already begun envisioning my future career as a therapist.

It wasn’t only a passion for helping others. I hoped that one day I could walk alongside someone during one of the hardest parts of their life—being present as they found their way toward healing, began to feel more capable, and perhaps most importantly, less alone.

Because at the heart of it all, what many people are searching for is to feel heard.

I grew up in sunny Southern California, but my journey eventually brought me to Arizona when I moved here to study psychology as an undergraduate. Like many people who come to the desert for school, I expected to stay only a few years. Arizona had other plans. I quickly fell in love with the community here and with Arizona State University. I stayed to complete my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, becoming a proud Sun Devil along the way.

During those years of training, I became fascinated by the way we influence one another: how family dynamics shape us, how patterns develop, and how healing often requires more than just one person changing. That curiosity led me into the world of family systems therapy.

After graduate school, I worked in community mental health supporting individuals and families who had experienced significant trauma. Some of the most impactful work I did during that time involved supporting families through reunification, helping parents and children rebuild trust and safety after incredibly difficult experiences. Those moments reinforced something I continue to see every day in this work: healing rarely happens in isolation. When one person is hurting, the entire system around them feels it. But when healing begins, the ripple effects can be just as powerful.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that the kind of work I felt most drawn to was the kind that happens at Anew Treatment Center. I still remember my first day…
