What do you do when your back hurts but you still don't know the root cause?

You don't have to guess your way through it.

Start by looking at what you're doing, what your body is tolerating, and whether you're actually addressing the factors that may be contributing to the problem.

If something hurts, your first instinct might be to avoid it completely.

But your body still needs load.

The question is how much is appropriate for you right now, and how that changes as your capacity improves.

We break this down further in our newest YouTube video. Link in bio.

Pain doesn't always mean the answer is to stop.

What matters is understanding what your body can tolerate right now and how you respond to what you're asking it to do.

The goal isn't simply more activity or less activity. It's finding the right amount at the right time.

When your back hurts, it's easy to start thinking certain movements or activities are automatically bad for you.

But avoiding everything isn't always the answer.

The better question is whether your body is ready for the amount of load you're asking it to handle right now.

A diagnosis can give you a name for what hurts. But that doesn't always tell you why it happened in the first place.

Sometimes the thing we're focused on is the last domino to fall, not the first.

Understanding the difference can completely change how you think about what comes next.

This distinction matters:

Ruling something OUT is not the same as ruling something IN.

One test rarely tells the entire story.

The goal isn't to chase one positive test, one MRI finding, or one diagnosis. It's to put the pieces together and understand the person in front of us.

That's how you move from simply naming the problem to figuring out what to do about it.

Is it your hip or your low back?

Sometimes the location of the pain doesn't give you the whole answer.

These are two tests we can use as part of an assessment to gather more information about where your symptoms may be coming from.

But there's an important catch...

A test can help us rule something out, but that doesn't automatically mean we've identified the cause.

More on that tomorrow.

Hip pain or low-back pain?

Treating one without figuring out whether the other is involved can mean you're focusing on the wrong piece of the problem.

That's why the first step isn't guessing. It's figuring out where your symptoms are actually coming from.

Tomorrow, we'll show you two of the tests we use to help differentiate between the hip and low back.

An MRI is incredibly useful. But an MRI doesn't feel your pain. You do.

Imaging is one piece of the puzzle, and what shows up on a scan needs to be considered alongside your symptoms, movement, history, and what you're actually experiencing.

So if you've ever wondered, “My MRI says this... but is that really why I hurt?” this one's for you.

Getting a diagnosis can feel like getting an answer.

Sometimes, it's only the beginning of the conversation.

The better question is: What does this finding actually mean for me, and what do I do next?

That's where understanding the bigger picture matters.
