💬✨ Echolalia is the repetition of words, phrases, and/or sounds. The repetition can be instant or delayed, and can be modified or exact from the source. This type of language is commonly seen in early language development and in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

More than “just repeating,” echolalia may be a child's way to request, respond, self-regulate, or participate socially while building their language skills.

SLPs work to identify the meaning of echolalic utterances. Then, if appropriate, the SLP can support the child's ability to modify their utterance so it may be relayed more effectively!

Pretend play is a powerful developmental activity!

In pretend play, children use their imagination to assign roles to objects or people. Think of tea parties with teddy bears, two toys having a back-and-forth conversation, or friends acting like superheroes on the playground.

This type of imaginative play aids in the development of a variety of communication and social-emotional areas, which is why our clinicians love to use pretend play in their treatment whenever possible!

Social communication is a very involved process, and because of this, there are many ways that a child might struggle to communicate socially.

If you have concerns about your child's social communication, reach out to us and we can help! Our SLPs are knowledgeable in teaching social language skills to children of all ages. Additionally, we offer two social group semesters each year at our Scottsdale office and run a social summer camp, Kamp Talk A Lot.
