Avoiding shoe tying is not always about willingness.

It can look like a child does not want to learn.

Tying shoes requires coordination between both hands, the ability to follow a sequence, and precise control of small movements.

Memorial Day is a time to pause, remember, and honor.

As families gather, it can also be a meaningful opportunity to help children connect with the significance of the day in simple, thoughtful ways.

Small activities can create both understanding and connection:
• writing thank you notes to honor service
• creating simple posters or cards of remembrance
• copying names or messages with care and intention
• reflecting through drawing and writing

These moments are not about perfect handwriting.

They are about slowing down, being present, and helping children engage with meaning through movement and writing.

Messy handwriting is not always a sign of rushing.

It is a common assumption.
If the work looks messy, the child must be rushing.

But often, that is not what is happening.

Sometimes the hand is working hard just to keep up.
Fatigue sets in quickly. Control decreases. Output becomes messy.

From the outside, it can look like rushing.
From the inside, it can feel like effort.

Can learning cursive actually help children read better?

It is a question gaining attention, with some policymakers now exploring the role of cursive in literacy development.

And while the conversation is growing, it is not entirely new.

Cursive writing requires continuous, connected movement.
It engages coordination, sequencing, and rhythm in a different way than print.

For some children, this can support:
• smoother letter formation
• improved flow of ideas
• stronger connections between reading and writing

But the answer is not as simple as adding cursive practice.

Because handwriting, whether print or cursive, reflects underlying skills:
• motor control
• visual processing
• coordination
• endurance

Without these, any form of writing can still feel effortful.

So the question may not just be
“Should we teach cursive?”

But rather
“What skills does the child need to access writing successfully?”

Avoidance is not always fear. It can be a clue.

When a child avoids new playground equipment, it is often labeled as being fearful.

But sometimes, it is not about fear.

It can be a nervous system that does not feel safe yet.
New movements feel unpredictable. The body is unsure how to respond.

So the child steps back.

We look beyond the behavior and support what is underneath:
• confidence through movement
• introduce challenges gradually
• regulation skills
• Moro reflex integration

Because when the body feels more organized and secure, children are more willing to try, explore, and engage.

But what we see in practice tells a different story.
