Sometimes the biggest wins arenโ€™t just about how the handwriting looks.

Theyโ€™re about how a child feels about what they can do.

After working with Scribble 2 Script, one parent shared that her childโ€™s handwriting had improved so much that she could hardly compare it to where he started.

One change stood out immediately: he had consistently flipped the J in his name throughout the previous school year. During the first week of the new school year, he didnโ€™t flip it once.

He was also telling his family that his hand wasnโ€™t getting tired, and he was using his left hand at school.

But perhaps the most meaningful part?

After completing his pโ€™s and jโ€™s homework, he was incredibly proud of his work.

And his parent noticed that pride, too.

Thatโ€™s the part of progress that deserves celebrating.

Because handwriting support isnโ€™t only about producing neater letters. Itโ€™s about helping children develop the skills they need to participate more comfortably, experience success, and recognize what theyโ€™re capable of.

Sometimes the most important change is the smile that comes after, โ€œLook what I did!โ€ ๐Ÿ’›

Screens arenโ€™t the whole story.

Technology is part of modern childhood. The more useful developmental question is:

What experiences are being displaced when screen time takes up more space?

Because children develop through experience.

Movement.
Hands-on exploration.
Creative play.
Real-world problem-solving.
Boredom.
Social interaction.
Manipulating objects.
Trying something that doesnโ€™t immediately work.

So instead of asking only, โ€œHow much screen time does this child have?โ€

We can also ask:

What else is happening?

What are they touching?
What are they building?
How are they moving?
What are they creating?
What are they figuring out?

The goal isnโ€™t guilt.

Itโ€™s awareness.

Technology doesnโ€™t have to be the enemy for children to need room for the experiences that support development.

Sometimes the fastest way to finish a task skips the part a child needs most.

It makes sense to help. Weโ€™re busy, school moves quickly, and itโ€™s tempting to step in when a child is struggling with something we could do in seconds.

But for a child, the doing matters.

Picking up and manipulating objects. Moving their body. Trying something, seeing what happens, and trying again. Using their hands to solve a problem before someone solves it for them.

Those experiences help build the skills we later ask children to use in the classroom.

I see this when a child has wonderful ideas but writing them down is exhausting. We can help them get the assignment finished, and sometimes they absolutely need that support. I also want to ask: What is making the writing so hard, and how can we help build that skill?

The finished work tells us something. How the child got there tells us something, too.

Development comes before performance.

If your child seems to know more than they can consistently show on paper, it may be time to look at whatโ€™s happening underneath the task.

We often think of paying attention as sitting still, keeping our hands quiet, and looking at the person who is speaking.

But children donโ€™t all show attention in exactly the same way.

A child may tap their pencil, shift in their chair, move their hands, stand while working, or change positions throughout an activity. Our first instinct might be to stop the movement so they can โ€œfocus.โ€

But what happens when we get curious instead?

Does the child participate more when theyโ€™re allowed to move? Do they stay with the activity longer? Does changing position help them organize themselves enough to listen, think, or complete the task?

That doesnโ€™t mean every movement is helpful, or that movement automatically means a child has ADHD. It means we have an opportunity to look beyond the behavior and ask what it may be telling us.

๐๐ž๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ซ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.

This is especially important during ADHD Awareness Month. Children are often expected to sit longer, focus longer, transition faster, and manage increasingly complex demands. Yet development also depends on movement, exploration, hands-on experiences, and opportunities to discover what helps our bodies and brains participate.

So instead of only asking, โ€œHow do we get this child to sit still?โ€

Try asking:

โ€œWhat does this child need in order to participate?โ€

That small shift can change what we notice, what we try, and how we support a child.

Because attention doesnโ€™t always have to look like stillness.

If youโ€™re noticing a mismatch between what a child is expected to do and what they are able to do, letโ€™s explore what might be underneath it.

A child may know exactly what they want to say, but getting those thoughts onto paper can be a very different story.

Writing is a complex process. It brings together motor skills, visual processing, planning, memory, attention, spelling, and written expression.

So when a child struggles to write, the question shouldnโ€™t always be:

โ€œWhy arenโ€™t they trying harder?โ€

A better question might be:

โ€œWhat is their writing telling us?โ€

Dysgraphia can affect children in different ways, and difficulty with writing is not simply a reflection of a childโ€™s intelligence, effort, or potential.

International Dysgraphia Awareness Day is a reminder to slow down, look beneath the skill, and get curious about what may be making writing difficult.

Because when we understand the child behind the handwriting, we can begin to understand what they need to succeed. ๐Ÿ’›

A child struggles with handwriting, so we practice handwriting.

A child works slowly, so we tell them to work faster.

A child keeps moving, so we remind them to sit still.

It makes sense.

We see the struggle, so we focus on the struggle.

But what if weโ€™re starting too far downstream?

Before asking a child to perform a skill, it can help to look at what comes before that skill.

Handwriting isnโ€™t just about forming letters. It also calls on posture, fine motor control, visual processing, motor planning, attention, coordination, and regulation.

So when a childโ€™s performance doesnโ€™t seem to match what they know or what theyโ€™re capable of, there may be more to understand.

Instead of immediately asking:

โ€œHow do we fix this?โ€

Try asking:

That question doesnโ€™t mean lowering expectations.

It means looking for the foundation that can help a child reach them.

Look beneath the performance.
Get curious before you get corrective.

If youโ€™re noticing a pattern in the way your child writes, moves, focuses, or approaches challenging tasks, weโ€™re here to help you look at the bigger picture.

Maybe this is the biggest message I want you to take from September:

Donโ€™t stop at the performance.

A childโ€™s handwriting is information. Their posture is information. Their movement is information. Their avoidance is information. Their rushing is information. Their fatigue is information.

Not a diagnosis. Not a label. Not proof that something is wrong.

Information.

And when we begin looking at those clues together, we can start asking better questions:

What is making this task difficult?
What happens before the struggle appears?
What changes as the child becomes tired?
What other patterns are showing up?
What developmental foundation might be worth exploring?

We donโ€™t lower expectations. We donโ€™t blame the child. We donโ€™t assume parents arenโ€™t doing enough. We donโ€™t jump to conclusions.

We get curious.

Because sometimes the most important thing we can change isnโ€™t the childโ€™s performance.

Itโ€™s the way we look at the child.

If youโ€™ve been wondering what your childโ€™s patterns may be telling you, letโ€™s start that conversation.
