If you’ve ever been made to feel guilty for going to a festival, judged for the music you love, or told you’re “too old” to still want these experiences… this episode is for you.

Especially if you’ve tried to explain that being at a concert or festival makes you feel more alive, more connected, or somehow more like yourself.

I’m a psychiatrist. I’ve spent years studying the mind and working with patients, and I want to say this very clearly:

There may actually be a reason these experiences feel so good to your brain and nervous system.

We’re talking music, movement, connection, release, and why the dance floor can be a lot more psychologically meaningful than people give it credit for.

The full episode is out now on YouTube. 🎧

My honest insights....

I don’t think influencers ruined festivals.

I don’t think phones did either.

I think we’ve gotten so used to being “on” that sometimes we start watching ourselves have the experience instead of actually having it.

Take the photo. Film your favorite song. Post the outfit. We all do... but then put the phone down.

Give Yourself Permission™ to dance, get sweaty ,talk to somebody, forget what you look like for a minute.

Some memories don’t need an audience.

What do you think: has social media made festivals better, or are we losing something by documenting everything?

One of my favorite things about DJing is getting to create the energy of a room.

On September 10, I’ll be stepping behind the decks as Dr. Vie™ for an exclusive evening at alice + olivia Scottsdale, hosted by Jennifer Kaplan.

For me, these experiences are another extension of the work I’m passionate about: bringing music, culture, human connection and creativity into spaces where people can actually experience them together.

The evening will include ch*****ne, light bites, shopping, an exclusive 30% off, a permanent bracelet with purchase*, and a live soundtrack by Dr. Vie™. 🎧

Thursday, September 10 | 6–8 PM
alice + olivia Scottsdale
15147 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 182

RSVP: [email protected]

Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces, and setting the vibe for the night.

Mental wellness doesn’t only belong in a therapy room.

It belongs in the workplace.
At events.
Inside music.
In culture.
In the spaces where people actually live.

That’s why my work extends beyond traditional psychiatry.

I speak.
I collaborate with brands.
I create music + regulation experiences.
I work with organizations, events and creative teams.

If you’re building something at the intersection of mental wellness, music, culture, creativity or human performance, I’d love to hear about it.

What if regulation doesn’t always look like being calm?

Sometimes it looks like dancing.

Sometimes it looks like hearing the first few seconds of your favorite song and immediately feeling your shoulders drop.

Sometimes it’s being surrounded by people who love the same thing you do and realizing, for a few hours, you’re completely present.

The right event can give your nervous system things it may have been missing all week:

Rhythm. Movement. Connection. Novelty. Anticipation. Belonging.

This is why concerts, festivals and shared experiences can feel so different from simply “going out.”

Your body is moving. Your attention is being pulled away from the mental loop you’ve been living in. You’re responding to rhythm. You’re reading cues from the people around you. You’re experiencing something with other humans instead of just consuming it alone.

But there’s an important distinction:
**More stimulation doesn’t automatically mean more regulation.**

The same event that makes one person feel alive can overwhelm someone else.

The goal is learning what helps *your* nervous system feel connected, present and safe.

Try asking yourself afterward: "What did I get from that night that I’m missing in my everyday life?"

Sometimes you don’t need another night on the couch. Sometimes you need music, movement and a reminder that you’re alive. 🎶

Send this to the person who always says, “I swear concerts are my therapy.” 😂

The dance floor has always felt like more than just a place to dance to me.

It’s a community. And the best nights happen when everyone understands that we’re part of each other’s experience.

Make room when someone needs out. Check on the person who doesn’t look okay. Respect the people who got there before you. Keep your hands to yourself. And please… read the room before putting your friend on your shoulders. 😂

Some of these rules are about etiquette. Some are about safety. All of them come down to the same thing:

Look out for each other.

Now I want to hear yours 👀 What’s an unspoken dance floor rule you wish EVERYONE knew?

Ever walk into a room and immediately forget why?

Read the same sentence three times?

Feel mentally exhausted even though you haven't done anything physically demanding?

You might not be "lazy."

You might be experiencing **cognitive overload.**

Cognitive overload happens when your brain is trying to process more information than it has the capacity to handle at that moment. Notifications. Emails. Decisions. Conversations. Social media. Background noise. Constant multitasking.

Your brain wasn't designed to juggle endless streams of input without a cost.

When your mental bandwidth is maxed out, you may notice:
🧠 Difficulty concentrating
🧠 Forgetfulness
🧠 Decision fatigue
🧠 Feeling overwhelmed by simple tasks
🧠 Irritability or mental exhaustion

The solution isn't always to become *more* productive.

Sometimes it's to become more intentional about what you allow your brain to carry.

As a psychiatrist, I often remind people that your attention is one of your brain's most valuable resources. Every notification, every tab left open, every unfinished task takes up a little bit of that space.

Protecting your attention isn't a luxury.

It's brain health.

✨ Give Yourself Permission™ to close the extra tabs, not just on your computer, but in your mind.

Have you ever caught yourself in cognitive overload without realizing it?

Have you ever noticed that the best DJs aren't trying to be the center of attention?

They're paying attention to *you.*

Reading the room.
Watching energy shift.
Knowing when people feel safe enough to dance, connect, and fully be themselves.

The same principle applies far beyond music.

As a psychiatrist, I've learned that people don't thrive when they're constantly worried about being judged. They thrive when they feel psychologically safe.

That's when creativity emerges. That's when confidence grows. That's when authenticity replaces performance.

Whether you're leading a team, raising a family, building a community, or simply showing up for a friend, your role isn't to control the room.

It's to create an environment where people feel safe enough to become more of themselves.

Maybe that's what great leadership, and great DJing, have always had in common.

🎧 Give Yourself Permission™ to stop trying to impress everyone and start creating spaces where people feel safe to shine.

What environment has made you feel the most like yourself?

Excited to share my conversation on the Between the Doctors Podcast with Dr. Ajay Bhatnagar. 🎙️

We talked about a question that has shaped so much of how I approach psychiatry:

What if mental health care felt less like a clinical appointment, and more like a personalized partnership?

For me, modern psychiatric care has never been about a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s about understanding the whole person, their goals, lifestyle, relationships, ambitions, and the life they’re actually trying to build.

In this episode, we dive into my approach to creating more personalized, relationship-driven mental health care and why I believe evidence-based medicine and genuine human connection should exist in the same room.

Because mental wellness isn’t just about treating symptoms. It’s about helping people create lives they feel well enough to fully experience.

Thank you to Between the Doctors and Dr. Bhatnagar for having me and creating space for this conversation. 🤍

Do you leave certain conversations feeling completely exhausted...

Even though you barely said anything?

You might be carrying emotional labor.

It's the invisible work of constantly managing other people's emotions, keeping the peace, listening, fixing, reassuring, and putting everyone else's needs before your own.

The tricky part is that many people don't even realize they're doing it.

In this episode of Give Yourself Permission™, we're breaking down what emotional labor is, how to recognize it in your own relationships, and what you can do if it's leaving you emotionally drained.
