Helping people understand and work through big emotions matters far beyond the moment. πŸ’›

These are skills we carry into our relationships, our families, our workplaces, and our communities.

Supporting regulation isn’t about never having big feelings. It’s about having the tools and support to move through them. 🌱

Every year, colleges graduate thousands of early childhood special education teachers without ever teaching them how a child’s nervous system actually works. We train educators to manage behaviors, but we fail to teach them how to identify a child who is in fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown. When teacher preparation programs completely omit nervous-system regulation, it stops being an individual teacher problem and becomes a complete systemic failure. A child who does not feel safe cannot learn. By treating physiological distress as intentional bad behavior, our education system drives teacher burnout, increases classroom trauma, and fails our most vulnerable students. True classroom management starts with co-regulation. To be continued…

What can occupational therapy support? More than many people realize. πŸ’™

OT is about helping people participate more fully in the activities, relationships, roles, and routines that make life meaningful.

Support may include:

✨ Sensory processing
✨ Daily living skills
✨ Social and emotional development
✨ Fine and gross motor skills
✨ Identifying your values and creating greater alignment
✨ Financial and household management
✨ Building sustainable routines
✨ Self-awareness and identity development
✨ Practical life skills, self-advocacy, and independence

There is no single way OT should look. Neurodiversity-affirming occupational therapy starts with the whole personβ€”their strengths, needs, values, nervous system, environment, and vision for their life.

At Sensory Life Assessment & Wellness, our goal is meaningful participation: helping you build a life that works with who you are.

Save this carousel for later or share it with someone who wants to understand the broader possibilities of OT. 🌱

TW: Su***de, mental health, and autistic youth.

Neurodivergent youth face a significantly higher risk of dying by su***de than their peers. Traditional school environments have contributed to this crisis by:

-Forced Masking: The exhausting pressure to hide natural traits to fit in.
-Punishing Needs: Treating sensory overload or stress as β€œbad behavior.”
-Chronic Isolation: Bullying and a lack of genuine social belonging.

Affirming schools act as a frontline defense by changing the environment, not the child. They celebrate different minds, normalize sensory breaks, and eliminate the expectation to conform.

Shifting schools from places of compliance to places of true acceptance removes the daily despair that can lead to crisis.

Being a professional doesn’t mean leaving the human parts of me at the door. I self-disclose. I probably talk about my dog too much. And I will always, always say the system needs fixing before I say the person does.

If that’s not your thing then no hard feelings, truly. But if it is? Welcome, you’re in the right place. 😊

πŸ’¬ Tell me one reason to unfollow you. I’ll go first in the comments.

⚠️ This is a reflection on how I show up online and in practice, not clinical advice. If something here brings up heavy stuff for you, please reach out to a therapist or someone you trust. You deserve support too.
