Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) usually has a neuropathic pain component. Entrapped or irritated superficial nerves can produce pain, swelling, itching, and increased sensitivity.

CPSP can pose a severe nuisance to patients, leading to functional limitation and psychological trauma, as well as a source of frustration and disappointment for a surgical team.

Estimates on prevalence range significantly from 5%-85%: As examples, 50%–85% following limb amputation, 11%–57% following mastectomy, 30%–55% following cardiac surgery, 5%–65% after thoracotomy, and 5%–63% following hernia repair.
