🇺🇸 HOSPICE & VA BENEFITS: MYTHS AND FACTS FOR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES

One of the most common questions we hear from veterans and their families is:

"If I start hospice, will I lose my VA benefits?"

The answer is NO.

There is a common misconception that veterans must choose between hospice services and Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits. In reality, many veterans are eligible to receive hospice care while continuing to access certain VA services and benefits.

âś… FACT: Hospice and VA benefits can often work together.

Veterans enrolled in hospice may still be eligible for various VA benefits, programs, and support services depending on their individual circumstances and enrollment status.

Veterans may continue receiving:

• VA healthcare services unrelated to their hospice diagnosis
• VA disability compensation
• Pension benefits
• Aid and Attendance benefits
• Caregiver support programs
• Medical equipment or services through the VA
• Veteran recognition programs and resources

❌ MYTH: Choosing hospice means losing all VA support.

Hospice care is designed to focus on comfort and quality of life. It does not automatically cancel VA benefits or veteran status.

❌ MYTH: Veterans can only receive care from one organization.

Many hospice providers work collaboratively with the VA to coordinate care and ensure veterans receive the support they have earned through their service.

Why is this important?

Veterans and their families have often sacrificed greatly for our country. Understanding available resources can help reduce financial stress, improve access to services, and ensure veterans receive comprehensive support during serious illness.

At Care Plus Hospice, we are honored to care for veterans and help families understand how hospice and VA benefits may work together. Every veteran's situation is unique, and we encourage families to ask questions so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

🏡 Hospice Is More Than Medical Care — It’s Support for Everyday Life

When people think about hospice, they often think about nurses and medications.
What many don’t realize is that some of the most meaningful support happens in the small, everyday moments.

At Care Plus Hospice, we provide homemaker support—a service that helps patients and families manage daily life when things start to feel overwhelming.

As illness progresses, even simple tasks can become exhausting for both the patient and their loved ones. That’s where this support makes a real difference.

Our homemaker services may include:

• Light housekeeping to keep the environment clean and comfortable
• Meal preparation or assistance with simple meals
• Laundry and maintaining a safe, organized space
• Helping reduce clutter and fall risks
• Supporting caregivers by easing daily responsibilities

This type of support is not about replacing family care—it’s about lifting some of the weight off their shoulders.

Families often tell us that what they need most is not just medical care, but help keeping life manageable during a difficult time.

For facilities and caregivers, homemaker support can also:

• Help maintain a clean and safe patient environment
• Reduce caregiver burnout
• Allow staff to focus more on clinical needs
• Improve overall patient comfort and dignity

What makes this service special is that it brings normalcy and calm into a situation that can otherwise feel overwhelming.

At Care Plus Hospice, we believe that caring for a patient means caring for their entire environment and support system—not just their diagnosis.

Because sometimes, the smallest acts of help make the biggest difference. đź’™

Hospice and Assisted Living Communities

Hospice care often works closely with assisted living and memory care communities to support residents experiencing serious illness.

When hospice becomes involved, the goal is to support the existing care team, not replace it. Hospice nurses, aides, and other team members collaborate with facility staff to help manage symptoms, reduce hospital transfers, and improve resident comfort.

Hospice can also provide medical equipment, medications related to the hospice diagnosis, and additional support for families during difficult times.

This partnership helps residents remain in familiar surroundings while receiving compassionate, coordinated care.

Understanding the Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care

Many healthcare providers and families ask about the difference between palliative care and hospice care.

Both focus on improving quality of life and managing symptoms, but there is an important distinction.

Palliative care can be provided at any stage of illness, even while a patient continues curative treatments.

Hospice care is designed for individuals who have a serious illness with a life expectancy of approximately six months or less, when the focus shifts from curative treatment to comfort and supportive care.

Hospice provides an interdisciplinary team that works with facility staff, families, and physicians to ensure coordinated care focused on dignity, comfort, and respect.

Understanding these differences helps families and healthcare providers ensure patients receive the most appropriate level of care.

In recent months, there has been increased attention across the healthcare community regarding hospice services. Reports released by organizations such as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have highlighted concerns about some providers not following proper guidelines, including enrolling patients who may not meet eligibility criteria.

This has led to important actions being taken to protect patients and ensure that hospice care remains what it is meant to be—compassionate, appropriate, and centered on those who truly need it.

At Care Plus Hospice, we believe it’s important to approach this conversation with honesty and care. Not all providers are the same, and moments like this remind us how essential it is for families to stay informed and ask questions when choosing hospice services.

We gently encourage families and caregivers to:
• Take time to understand hospice eligibility and services
• Ask providers about their care approach and compliance practices
• Choose a team that prioritizes dignity, comfort, and transparency

We are grateful to share that our recent audit showed no deficiencies or irregularities. This reassures our team and our community that we continue to follow all Medicare guidelines and provide care based on need—not profit.

Our mission has always been simple: to be there for patients and families during one of the most important times in life, with integrity, compassion, and respect.

Thank you for trusting us and for being part of a community that values doing things the right way.

Understanding Hospice: It’s About Living Well

Many people hear the word hospice and immediately think it means the end. In reality, hospice care is about helping patients live as comfortably and meaningfully as possible during serious illness.

Hospice focuses on improving quality of life by managing symptoms, supporting emotional well-being, and helping families navigate difficult moments with guidance and compassion.

Hospice services typically include:

• Regular nursing visits and symptom monitoring
• Medical equipment such as hospital beds, oxygen, and wheelchairs
• Medications related to comfort and symptom control
• Personal care assistance through hospice aides
• Emotional and spiritual support for both patients and families
• 24/7 on-call support when concerns arise

Hospice care allows patients to remain in familiar surroundings while receiving compassionate care that prioritizes dignity, comfort, and support.

At Care Plus Hospice, we believe every person deserves to feel supported, respected, and cared for during life’s most vulnerable moments.

HOSPICE CARE: WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND

🌱 Failure to Thrive / Overall Decline

General decline often looks like less eating, more sleeping, and reduced interest in daily activities. Families may feel helpless, but these changes are a natural part of the body slowing down.

The most meaningful care during this time is presence—sitting quietly, holding a hand, speaking softly, and offering reassurance. There is no need to push food, fluids, or activity.

Hospice helps families understand that comfort and dignity are the goals and reassures them that they are doing the right thing.

HOSPICE CARE: WHAT TO EXPECT & HOW TO RESPOND
End-Stage Liver Disease

Liver disease can cause swelling, confusion, weakness, and changes in behavior. Periods of confusion can be frightening, but staying calm and keeping the environment safe helps prevent injury.

Bleeding or sudden changes in awareness should be reported to hospice immediately. Most symptoms can be managed at home with medication and nursing support.

Hospice focuses on comfort, symptom control, and helping families feel supported during unpredictable changes.
