Your 10-year heart risk may look low simply because you’re young. That doesn’t mean your arteries are clear. 🫀

The REACT study, presented at ESC Congress 2026 and published in NEJM, imaged more than 16,000 adults without known heart disease. Over half already had silent atherosclerosis, including about half of men and a third of women by age 40. Standard risk calculators missed most of these cases, especially in women and younger adults. For women, plaque rose more steeply around menopause, which may be a key window for prevention.

This was a cross-sectional study, so it doesn’t prove that earlier treatment changes outcomes. A randomized follow-up trial is expected to begin in 2027. Still, the message is clear: managing cholesterol and blood pressure early matters. Ask your doctor about your lifetime cardiovascular risk.

Could what’s on your plate affect your mood? 🥗🧠 A new pilot trial in JAMA Psychiatry followed 20 adults with major depressive disorder who ate diets high in ultraprocessed foods. When they cut their intake by more than 85%, they scored significantly lower on three measures of depression and had modestly improved anxiety scores.

This was a small study, and researchers haven’t yet established a direct mechanism, but it adds to growing evidence that food quality matters for both metabolic and mental health. Larger trials are the next step.

Constipation is one of the most common side effects of GLP-1 medications, and one of the least talked about. These medications can slow your digestive system as part of how they work, but that slowdown can leave you backed up. The good news is that it's very treatable.

Perimenopause and menopause can have a real impact on the workplace, yet many women may not feel comfortable talking about what they’re experiencing. A recent survey of 1,000 employed UK women found that 51% of women age 35 and older said symptoms had negatively affected them at work, while 18% described the impact as significant. The research also found that 38% would not feel confident telling their manager, and 64% either had no workplace support or were unsure whether support existed. Symptoms such as mood changes, anxiety, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating can sometimes be mistaken for stress or burnout, making awareness and support especially important.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to encourage education, screening, and awareness around breast health. Breast cancer risk can be influenced by factors such as age, family history, genetics, hormone exposure, and overall health. Staying familiar with what is normal for your body, keeping up with recommended screenings, and talking with your healthcare provider about your individual risk can all support earlier detection and informed care.

Some everyday supplements can interfere with thyroid treatment if they’re taken too close to medication or lab testing. Calcium can reduce levothyroxine absorption, while biotin can interfere with thyroid blood tests and make TSH, T4, or T3 results appear inaccurate. Calcium is generally taken at least four hours apart from levothyroxine, and biotin may need to be stopped before thyroid labs based on your clinician’s guidance. Always let your healthcare provider know which vitamins and supplements you take so they can interpret your medication response and test results accurately.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect more than mood, sleep, and hot flashes. Some women may also experience ear-related symptoms such as tinnitus, itching, a feeling of fullness, and occasional dizziness, which may be linked to changing estrogen levels and their effects on the inner ear and ear canal. Because these symptoms can also have other causes, such as earwax buildup, infection, or TMJ issues, they should not automatically be attributed to perimenopause. Persistent or concerning symptoms are worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
