On September 17, we delivered 100 personal care item bags — made possible in part by — to the Mesa Family Resource Center at the Main Library, a resource for local families and individuals.

We are thrilled with this new library connection! Librarians and other city workers are the unsung backbone of our community.

Are you looking for a fun, kid-approved sun safety lesson to do at home? Help your kids make edible "toxic waste" to learn about the invisible world!
We made “toxic waste” desserts on September 29 with the help of kids at A New Leaf!

This activity explores the idea that some things exist and have effects even when we can't see them, like UV radiation in sunlight that can cause sunburn.
Instructions:

1. Make a batch of Jell-O and a batch of pudding.

2. Add food coloring to make the Jell-O and pudding look as creepy as you like. We used lime Jell-O (which is already green) and vanilla pudding, which we colored orange.

3. Let the kids layer the Jell-O and pudding with candy and marshmallows. We used glow-in-the-dark Sour Patch Kids and orange and black M&M's as well a white (ghost) marshmallows. Top the concoctions with glow-in-the-dark edible powder. We used powder from Sugadeko that we purchased on Amazon.

4. Turn off the light and shine a blacklight flashlight on the toxic slime cups to see the candy and powders glow!

Relate this exploration of the invisible world to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight. We can’t see UV radiation without special tools, but it is very real.

We got into the Halloween spirit on September 21 with the adult class at the Foundation for Blind Children by making these holiday-themed cooling neck wraps together!

We were back at Arizona Recreation Center for the Handicapped (ARCH) on September 14th with a sun safety activity using glow-in-the-dark edible sprinkles, cookies, spooky frosting, and glow-in-the-dark body paint!

We did it! We turned in our skin cancer awareness license plate design to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) for review and feedback.

This design component was the most fun “homework” we’ve ever been asked to do. Thank you, Nikki Erickson, for your design.

On September 4th, we delivered 400 hygiene kits to St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) in Mesa to support the hygiene needs of our local, unhoused community. The kits included packets of soap sheets, bar soap, and body wipes.
SVdP provides meals to anyone in need every day of the week. They also provide showers and many other resources.
