New research underscores the power of Alzheimer’s blood tests like BrainScan. Multiple studies have now shown that we should not wait for symptoms to appear before getting tested, and in the latest report, participants with higher levels of Alzheimer’s biomarkers were more likely to experience significant cognitive decline five years after taking the blood test. But even at the initial test time, they already showed slower processing speed and worse executive function, presaging their later cognitive decline. Since we have published repeatedly that cognitive decline can often be reversed, this study is a wake-up call to take action and get tested.

The best time to test your blood biomarkers is right now, and the most sensitive and well-validated test is Neurocode’s BrainScan (getabrainscan.com). In addition to high-sensitivity p-tau 217 testing, BrainScan includes additional biomarkers GFAP, which indicates brain inflammation and repair, and NfL, which indicates any ongoing neuron damage. Just as hemoglobin A1c testing identifies pre-diabetes long before diabetes complications occur, early testing for Alzheimer’s biomarkers, coupled with the ReCODE protocol, should help us all to avoid dementia. Want to reduce your risk of cognitive decline?

Do not start with the most complicated protocol.

Start with the big four:

• Diet
• Exercise
• Sleep
• Stress reduction

Exercise supports blood flow, insulin sensitivity, mood, mitochondrial health, and the brain’s ability to maintain healthy connections.

Sleep gives the brain time to clear waste, regulate inflammation, and repair. Poor sleep and sleep apnea can increase risk.

Chronic stress affects cortisol, blood sugar, hormones, inflammation, and brain repair.

And every meal sends a signal. It can either support or stress the brain’s metabolic environment.

The brain does not need perfection.

It needs repeated signals of safety, energy, oxygen, nutrients, movement, and repair.

Your gut may be one of the most overlooked parts of Alzheimer’s prevention.

The gut and brain are constantly communicating through the immune system, the vagus nerve, microbial metabolites, and inflammatory signals.

When the gut barrier becomes irritated or the microbiome is disrupted, inflammatory compounds may increase. Over time, that can create a more inflammatory environment for the brain.

Common contributors may include:

• A highly processed diet
• Low fiber intake
• Dysbiosis
• Chronic constipation
• Alcohol
• Infections
• Food intolerances

Supporting the gut may include eating more real food, increasing fiber, adding polyphenol-rich foods, using fermented foods if tolerated, and identifying major gut triggers.

A healthier microbiome may help create a calmer immune system, and that matters for the aging brain.

Inflammation does not only affect your joints, digestion, or energy. It can also affect the brain.

When the body is exposed to ongoing inflammatory signals, the brain may shift away from repair and toward protection.

That inflammation may be connected to:

• Insulin resistance
• Poor gut health
• Oral bacteria
• Chronic stress
• Poor sleep or sleep apnea
• Infections
• Mold or toxin exposure
• Autoimmune activity
• A highly processed diet

This is why Alzheimer’s prevention is about more than memory exercises.

It means asking a deeper question:

Where is the inflammation coming from?

Blood tests such as CRP, sedimentation rate, TNF-alpha, and IL-6 may help provide clues, depending on the person.

Protecting the brain means lowering the inflammatory load on the whole body.

One of the most actionable ways to support long-term brain health may be to improve your blood sugar.

The brain needs a tremendous amount of energy. When glucose and insulin stay elevated over time, the brain may become less efficient at using fuel.

This is one reason insulin resistance is such an important conversation when we talk about cognitive decline.

The good news is that there are practical places to start:

• Reduce processed sugar
• Prioritize protein and fiber
• Build muscle
• Walk after meals
• Check fasting glucose, fasting insulin, A1c, and triglycerides

Protecting brain health starts with protecting the way the brain makes and uses energy.

Alzheimer’s disease may begin years, even decades, before noticeable memory loss appears.

And it is not just about amyloid plaques.

Blood sugar imbalance, chronic inflammation, toxins, poor sleep, vascular health, nutrient deficiencies, hormones, and genetics may all influence how well the brain ages.

The earlier we support the brain, the more opportunity we may have to protect cognitive health.

Follow for the next videos, where I will share treatment options and natural strategies for supporting brain health.

Governor Phil Scott just signed the first-in-the-nation ban on paraquat into law, making Vermont the first U.S. state to prohibit the use and sale of this toxic herbicide.

Paraquat is one of the most toxic herbicides still used in the U.S. and has been strongly linked to Parkinson’s disease and other serious health harms.

70+ countries have banned paraquat. EWG is now urging New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and other states to follow Vermont's lead, while California considers new restrictions of its own.

Thank you Gov. Phil Scott, bill sponsors, lawmakers and partners who helped make this happen:
State Rep. Esme Cole (D-Windsor), State Sen. Martine Gulick (D-Chittenden-Central District), Vermont Public Interest Research Group, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, Parkinson's Foundation, The American Parkinson Disease Association
