The Appalachian Trail is 2,197 miles long.
It runs through 14 states, from Georgia to Maine, over mountains and through forests and across terrain that has humbled some of the most experienced hikers in the world. The total elevation gain over the entire trail โ all the climbing, all the descending, all the relentless up-and-down of the Appalachian Mountains โ equals 465,000 feet.
Most people who attempt to hike the whole thing take five to seven months.
Tara Dower ran it in 40 days.
Every morning, she started moving at 3:30 am. She ran and hiked for approximately 17 hours โ averaging 54 miles a day on rocky, steep, unforgiving terrain. When she needed to rest, she took what she called "dirt naps": 90-second breaks on the ground before getting back up and continuing.
Ninety seconds.
She did this for forty days.
When she crossed the finish line in September 2024, Tara Dower โ a 31-year-old from Virginia โ had set the fastest known time for completing the Appalachian Trail by any person in history. Not the fastest woman. The fastest person.
She fell to her knees and put her hands on the bronze plaque at the trail's end.
It reads: "A footpath for those who seek fellowship with the wilderness."
She had sought it. She had found it. At 3:30 every morning for forty days, through rain and heat and exhaustion and a body that must have asked her, repeatedly, whether this was really necessary โ she had kept going.
She had also been raising money the entire time.
Before she set out, Tara Dower connected her record attempt to Girls on the Run โ a nonprofit that uses physical activity and positive mentorship to build confidence and life skills in young girls. By the time she finished, her run had raised over $100,000 for the organization.
She ran 2,197 miles for girls who are just learning to run their first mile.
When asked about her record โ about what it meant to be the fastest person to ever complete the trail โ she gave an answer that was characteristically direct:
"I hope more women get out there. It's not about beating men โ it's about finding our true potential. And, you know, if you beat the men, that's an extra bonus."
The extra bonus arrived in September 2024.
Forty days. Eighteen hours. Five minutes.
Fastest in history.
