Scrub up! 🧼🫧

Everybody washes their hands. But at HonorHealth, we treat it like an art form.

While the rest of the world is just trying to get through a quick rinse, our teams know that 20 seconds at the sink is the minimum for keeping our patients and each other safe — and for surgeons, that number can go up to 6 minutes!

Happy Global Handwashing Day to the pros who do it right every single time.

Fountain Hills is officially painting the town pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month — and two of our own were first to get the news. 💖

Dr. Stephanie Lindauer and Dr. Sommer Gunia, two of our breast cancer experts, received the official proclamation from the town council, noting that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women.

More than just a town milestone, this month is an opportunity to remember those we've lost, support those currently affected and celebrate every survivor.

HonorHealth Research Institute has completed its first case involving a new way to treat Type 2 Diabetes, which uses a minimally invasive radiofrequency heated v***r ablation of the mucosa, or inner lining, of the first part of the small intestine.

The procedure, created by Aqua Medical of Pleasanton, Calif., aims to improve diabetes control by endoscopically heating and resurfacing the mucosa of the duodenum — the first several inches of the small intestine, just past the stomach — which research suggests may play a role in blood sugar regulation.

This clinical trial, called RESTORE-1, aims to help those patients whose Type 2 Diabetes is not adequately controlled with medications, diet and exercise. Those eligible for the study must be: age 22-65; have Type 2 Diabetes for at least one year; not currently taking insulin; have a body mass index of 24-40 kilograms; and an HbA1c measure of 7.5-10%. All tests, procedures and clinic visits are free.

What researchers learn from this clinical trial could help provide less invasive treatment options for patients with Type 2 Diabetes, and eventually lead to FDA approval of the RESTORE-1 procedure.

Principal Investigator of this trial is James Swain, M.D., medical director of the Research Institute’s Bariatric/GI Research Division. Endoscopy used in this procedure was conducted by Amar Thosani, M.D., a board certified interventional gastroenterologist.

Dr. Erkut Borazanci, Medical Director of HonorHealth Research Institute’s Oncology Division, tells Arizona Horizon’s Ted Simons that a new pill for treating advanced pancreatic cancer “is such a huge milestone.”

Even before final FDA approval, the Research Institute was one of the first in the nation to offer this new drug, Daraxonrasib, which based on early data nearly doubles the average survival time of patients with pancreatic cancer.

“Thankfully, the company, with the FDA’s guidance, was able to offer this (drug) through an expanded access program,” Dr. Borazanci told Simons, the public affairs program’s long-time host. “These are individuals that may not have options. While it doesn’t … cure everyone with pancreas cancer, it gives them a lot greater opportunity to live longer, with a good quality of life.”

The medication’s effectiveness has been heralded ever since early test results were announced at this summer’s annual convention of the 45,000-member American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), prompting a standing ovation from the thousands of cancer physicians gathered in Chicago.

Daraxonrasib was approved by the FDA on Aug. 26 for adults with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma — meaning it has spread to other organs — and who have received at least one previous systemic therapy.

Sunil Sharma, M.D., FACP, M.B.A., director of the Center for Translational Science at HonorHealth Research Institute, has been named by the Arizona Bioindustry Association (AZBio) as the Arizona Bioscience Researcher of the Year.

Dr. Sharma will be honored at the 2026 AZBio Awards, on Oct. 7 at the Phoenix Convention Center. The 23rd annual awards banquet is part of Arizona Bioscience Week, Oct. 5-9.

“Recognized for his outstanding contributions to biological research and drug discovery, Dr. Sharma exemplifies what it means to push the frontiers of modern medicine,” according to Joan Koerber-Walker, President and CEO of AZBio.

Dr. Sharma, who describes himself as a physician-scientist, said he has always been interested how basic scientific research can lead to innovation, and how new treatments and new technologies, especially now, can benefit cancer patients.

Of his award, Dr. Sharma said, “I think mostly it’s recognition for the kind of work that we’re doing and it’s hopefully a great recognition for translational science in general, that it’s important and that it can add something to the (Arizona) bioscience corridor that we’re all trying to build.”

HonorHealth Research Institute's Dr. Erkut Borazanci was in studio with the FOX 10 News team today to discuss the Institute's use of a new pancreatic cancer treatment that is generating excitement across the oncology community.

The Institute was one of the first in the nation to offer this new drug, Daraxonrasib, which based on early data nearly doubles the average survival time of patients with pancreatic cancer.

“The survival was over a year with this pill,” Dr. Borazanci told FOX 10 News anchors. “We hope to build upon that success with other clinical trials.”

The medication’s effectiveness has been heralded ever since early test results were announced at this summer’s annual convention of the 45,000-member American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), prompting a standing ovation from the thousands of cancer physicians gathered in Chicago.

Most recently, Daraxonrasib was approved by the FDA on Aug. 26 for adults with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma — meaning it has spread to other organs — and who have received at least one previous systemic therapy.

“Up until this pill's approval last week, our options outside of a clinical trial was chemotherapy,” Dr. Borazanci said. ”This is the first targeted agent against pancreas cancer.”
