A fall in an older adult is often a significant turning point that deserves immediate attention. A fall can reveal underlying health problems and may start a cycle of declining independence if the causes aren’t addressed.
Here’s why falls are taken so seriously in geriatrics:
* Injuries: Hip fractures, head injuries, and spinal injuries can be life-changing. About 1 in 5 falls results in a serious injury.
* Loss of confidence: Many older adults develop a fear of falling again, leading them to become less active.
* Physical decline: Reduced activity can quickly lead to muscle weakness, poorer balance, and loss of mobility.
* Loss of independence: Some people require rehabilitation, home assistance, or even long-term care after a serious fall.
* Higher mortality risk: A hip fracture, in particular, is associated with an increased risk of death during the following year, especially in frail older adults.
