People often say, “I just want to start over.” After a divorce, a heartbreak, a health crisis, a career change, retirement, or loss, we imagine the answer is a completely clean slate—a blank page.

But is starting over even possible?
Would we really want to?

We imagine life gives us a blank page. In reality, every new chapter is shaped by the ones that came before it. We don’t erase what came before—we write from a different place because of it.

Sometimes we're not grieving the relationship as much as we're grieving the future we thought was possible.

What helped you finally let go?

One of the questions I hear most often when helping clients recover from betrayal is:

“If they knew they were unhappy, why didn’t they just leave?”

The truth is, some people don’t leave when they first know the relationship is over for them.

Instead, they begin emotionally checking out while their partner is still fully invested.

Some start an affair.

Others keep one foot in the relationship while quietly building a new life, waiting until they feel secure before ending it.

This creates one of the deepest wounds of betrayal.

The betrayed partner wasn’t given the opportunity to face the truth, have honest conversations, or make informed decisions about their own life.

They were unknowingly living in a relationship that no longer existed in the same way for the other person.

Healthy relationships don’t always last forever. But healthy endings require honesty.

If you’ve decided to leave, your partner deserves the dignity of knowing where they stand.

Keeping someone emotionally invested while you’ve already left in your heart isn’t avoiding pain—it’s delaying it and often multiplying it.

Betrayal isn’t just about an affair. It’s also about the loss of informed consent in a relationship.

When honesty is replaced with secrecy, the injury goes far beyond the breakup itself.

The Breakup Trap
After a breakup, your mind has a funny way of editing the story…

You replay the laughter, the chemistry, the good mornings—and forget the nights you cried, the conversations that never happened, the needs that went unmet.

Healing isn’t about forgetting the good. It’s about remembering the whole truth.

Don’t let nostalgia convince you to return to a place that hurt you.
