Summer travel is in full swing, and whether you're taking a quick weekend getaway or embarking on a 12-hour flight, it's important to know what happens to your skin in the air.

Most airplane cabins operate at just 10–20% humidity, while healthy skin typically thrives in an environment closer to 40–70% humidity. That dramatic drop can accelerate moisture loss from the skin, leading to dryness, tightness, irritation, and a dull complexion by the time you land.

What's particularly concerning is that some creators are using the UV Index as a tanning guide. The UV Index was designed to help people understand when UV radiation is strongest and when extra sun protection is needed, not as a tool for optimizing a tan.
Here's the truth: a tan is not a sign of health. It's a sign that your skin has been injured.
When your skin darkens, it's responding to UV radiation by producing more melanin in an attempt to protect itself from further damage. That bronzed glow is actually evidence of cellular damage occurring beneath the surface.
