AskJeevers

AskJeevers I'm practical. "Do What You Can, When You Can, The BEST You Can" - my motto. For some reason, as a kid, I was acutely aware of being different.

I'm a pretty decent SON (could also do more!), great BROTHER, sometimes forget your birthday but never your call FRIEND, and passionate "WORKER" (hardly call my efforts "work"). My story is fairly simple and incredibly unscripted or "strategic" as most professional coaches would like to call it. After I graduated college, as most first generation Indian's, I was off to the pre-destined Medical Sch

ool. Fortunately I was able to divert those plans with an excuse, I mean, a research trip to South America. However, those plans were derailed and I ended up having to use the time "off" to work in the YellowPage industry. I didn't learn much about nutrition, health, or wellness..but i did learn to get more comfortable with my stutter..which helped my presentation skills immensely! Trust me, the auto shop owner has no desire to listen to a 20 minute pitch on a "bold listing" that should have took 5 minutes. With some great success that ended with living in San Francisco, I (along with my parents) forgot about medical school...and nutrition was born. Well, actually, it was "conceived" because I ended up moving to Denver and helped start a nutrition company for professional athletes and began formulating products. A great interest in science, some incredible mentoring/teaching from nutritionists/formulators, and some early successes with products and...viola...my career as a formulator and sometimes stuttering nutrition presenter began! It's been close to 15 years now, I've formulated over 32 products, used by SuperBowl Winners and soccer mom's and have spoke and researched all around the world! My "story" may seem unique, but the essence of my path to where I am today is quite similar to many of us. Interesting it had nothing to do with my ethnicity, economic status, or stutter..it seemed to me everyone was much thinner than me. I was the "chubby" kid and I knew it. It shaped what I was and who I was. Later on, actually quite recently, my mother passed away. From a condition that I saved her from at one time and then gave up on the last time. My fortunate journey has taken me all over, seeing what health can achieve and the lack of attention to it can cause. My story is continuing to experience what I may be able to positively affect..helping the chubby kid, the sick mom, the grieving son.

👉 Roughly 50% of the food you’ve eaten at dinner leaves your stomach in 3hrs ⏱ The rest takes another 2hrs 🙊

But fear not, you don’t have to stop eating at lunch to have a productive and metabolically active sleep 😮‍💨

Staying “light” before “night” is key. Fiber helps to speed up digestion time so heavy on the veggies, light on the fish/meats. Don’t have too much carbohydrates or sugars because they’ll digest so quick you’ll be hungry again. Healthy protein and fats, lots of fiber/veggies, and watch the sugars!

Hey, hey..it's my BIRTHday!
I'm older, wiser, more experienced and...SORE. Goodness am I sore. I just got back into the gym from a 8 day break (sailing the British Virgin Islands..it was so nice and relaxing!) and it feels like I'm starting all over again.

Can you relate?

My muscles are sore, my joints are achy, my body feels tight, I'm tellin ya...warming up this "machine" of mine takes a bit longer and is a lot more grueling at 4...4...40-something than it used to!

That's why I figured sending you gifts of 20% off and FREE shipping on all orders of NERVE would be a perfect way to celebrate my BIRTHday (and my suffering) and get YOU ready for the new year, new YOU!

Most people use NERVE for pain relief and it does an amazing job at that. We actually have done REAL research, with a pain clinic and sports rehabilitation center, to show NERVE reduces muscle aches, improves joint function and mobility, and calms nerve pain (think sciatica!).

But what most people don't realize is that I formulated NERVE to also be a great Pre and Post workout..and remember, a workout is just being active!

Applying NERVE 20 minutes before your activity, warming up your muscles and joints, makes for safer movement and less sudden injury. Using NERVE right after your workout, supports healthy healing inflammation and detoxifies the body.

It's like a warm up and cool down in a bottle!

No other product has the support of such amazing organizations such as Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST), Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT), Titleist Performance Center (TPI) and top sports medicine and orthopedic surgeons like Dr. Richard Hawkins, Dr. Anikar Chhabra, Dr. Vonda Wright, and Dr. Jim Silliman.

It's not about being sore, achy, or in pain, it's about PERFORMANCE. Because NERVE is rooted in nurturing and strengthening nerve function, triggering a healthy, healing inflammatory response, and enhancing circulation and blood flow...it can help you to move and perform better.

My knee is killing me, but it’s not my knee! 🦵 I’m feeling a bit lanky, so I decided to embark on a program to get bigger, faster..no not faster, just bigger and stronger. 💪 And I hurt my knee.

Poor form, not enough rest (didn’t exactly follow the “rest” part of the program 🙊), getting old, whatever you want to blame it on, I can now barely sit in my car too long before it feels like an ice-pick is being shoved in my knee cap. 😓

Experts (my therapist) says, I inflamed my patella and most importantly my massive (not really) quads are tight. ❌ Too much stress on my quads (poor form) and ❌ not enough stretching (no time for Yoga), made me THINK I had hurt my knee, but really I just tightened up everything around it. Shifting the knee cap all around and causing pain.

Lessons learned: most pain never just “pops up”, the body is resilient, it will give you “whispers” long before. Always check the muscles/tissues around the joint, joint pain and stiffness can oftentimes stem from there. Act quickly, if you keep on moving/exercising, some other area is going to have to pick up the slack and you’re now headed for two injuries!

Collagen is one of the hottest supplements in health/beauty and overall wellness. It kinda started with the whole Bone Broth craze, which is a form of collagen and then began to get focused with Hydrolyzed Collagen and Collagen Peptides (which is, the exact same thing). NOTE: if you want to go really back, in the 60’s and 70’s many health experts would talk about the value of gelatin, like Knox Gelatine, and gelatin is also another form of collagen.

Why the craze or curiousness? Collagen is a form of protein that makes up 90% of our connective tissue and bone mass, 70% of our skin, it’s the most abundant form of protein in our body. It holds us together, so incredibly important. And as we age, like so many other things, it begins to degrade. This causes everything from saggy skin, loose joints, poor muscle activity, and…what I am concerned about, thinning hair 😉

There are basically 5 types of collagen, but the 3 main ones, Type 1, 2, and 3. Types 1 and 3 are derived from bovine (Type 1 can come from marine collagen) and these two types make up 90% of the total collage in our body – bones, muscles, skin, and HAIR! And Type 2 collagen, found mostly in chicken collagen, is found in our cartilage and joints.
Collagen is a protein. But it’s different than protein sources like Whey, Soy, Pea, Calcium Caseinate or any ones you find in protein based powders/supplements. That’s because they have a different amino acid profile, which makes collagen used differently in the body, rather than muscles, it’s for the connective tissue muscles are attached and surrounded in. Basically, don’t think that 20 grams of Collagen protein will give you the same benefits of 20 grams of Whey protein. I need to eat 280 grams of protein per day, I don’t count the protein I get from my collagen in the 280.

You’ll see Collage Protein and Collagen Peptides when you buy collagen. The difference is Collagen Peptide are broken down into smaller amino acid chains. The process is called “hydrolysis”, the collagen powder has been hydrolyzed. So if you see “Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder” and “Collagen Peptides” it’s the same thing. Collagen Protein is NOT fully hydrolyzed, it’s partial. So is

Weight loss, energy, recovery 👉 Vitamin B-12 shots have become increasingly popular. But are they really worth it⁉️

Before I start, Vitamin B-12, along with all the B-vitamins, is essential for complete body function. You need it and your body ain’t gonna make it on it’s own - hence “essential”‼️ You always hear of B-12, but there are (8) B-vitamins, that’s why you often get them as a ✨“B-Complex”✨. B-12 just happens to be so popular because it’s involved in fat and protein metabolism - ding, ding WEIGHT LOSS!🎊

So should you take B-12 shots or pills? Well, depends on your level of deficiency. If you’re levels are severely low, say you’re elderly, strict vegan, or on antacid medications, you might want to get the shot for bioavailability.

Bioavailability is “the ability of a drug or other substances to be absorbed and used by the body”. Injections will have 75%-100% bioavailability, while oral (pills or powders) can range from 5% to 100% depending on quality and a person's metabolism.

Ugh, also look at cost, a one 1000mcg injection is about $35.00 and the same pill amount in a pill is 5 to 10 cents! 🙊

My recommendation, if you’re immunocompromised or several deficient, go in for a few injections, other than that, take powered B-12 supplements in METHYLcobalamin form, this form is easier to absorb.

I think ice can be a pretty valuable tool to add to your recovery process. But this “age-ole” treatment does have its debaters.

It all stems from the fact that ice reduces inflammation by constricting blood vessels. While heat opens up blood vessels and rushes healing and beneficial immune factors and inflammation (healing as well!) to the area, cold therapy closes it off. One of the other elements it restricts is your lymphatic system, which carries away waste products and debris that result from the processes of inflammation, from the injured area.

Although this is true, you are restricting some healing and cleaning processes. The key to understand is, when using ice properly, you’re restricting the excess of these processes. For multiple reasons I can’t go into here (maybe another post), the body sometimes has a hard time regulating the amount of inflammation in an area and also knowing when to precisely turn it off. Here is where ice can come in handy.

Applying ice directly after injury for 20 minutes can regulate some of this excess and accelerated inflammatory processes that happen right after injury. Making sure it’s used only for 20 minutes and then reapplying only after waiting 30-40 minutes is key. Too much cold can have an opposite effect.

I find ice most useful with chronic issues, like my current knee pain. I can’t stay off my knee, so after every activity and a few times a day (especially after it tightens up after sitting at my desk for a while), I’ll apply ice to calm the inflammatory processes and progress my healing and recovery.

Cold sweats, heart pounding, feeling like you’re falling… 85% of adults experience occasional nightmares. 😣 BTW - kids do too! Dream experts believe that nightmares not only serve a purpose but they also signal a very important phase of sleep, REM 🛌

💭 Nightmares, which are basically frightening or negative dreams, occur primarily during the REM stage of sleep. During REM your brain is extremely active, it’s processing, organizing, and storing all kinds of information from your day. It’s also the time in which your glymphatic system turns on, the detoxifying systems of your brain. Cleaning out debris, removing toxins, neutralizing stress and free radicals, basically your brian is getting a healthy shower.

👉 Psychological experts believe that nightmares help people navigate their waking lives. They begin to develop neural responses to threats posed by our life before they happen, locked doors, avoiding an attack by a person or animal, responding to verbal threats, etc.. Nightmares can demonstrate potential dangers or feelings they have experienced or may fear in daily life.

Regardless, Nightmares are not fun 🙅🏾‍♂️ I’d rather be dreaming about flying around like a superhero than falling out of a plane 😜 But what nightmares tell me is that I’m in a powerful stage of sleep called REM, a very healthy, brain detoxifying, and important process of performance health!
