Dr. Amy Serin Dr. Amy Serin, PhD is a stress expert, neuropsychologist, inventor, author, and public speaker.

I had the pleasure of discussing the modern sleep epidemic with Dr. Bob Stickgold, Director of the Center for Sleep and Cognition at Harvard. In our casual cultural lexicon, people often throw around the phrase “feeling bipolar” to describe ordinary, day-to-day mood swings. But as a neuropsychologist, I see the objective data on brain maps every day: true bipolar disorder is a complex, deeply exhausting neurobiological condition. It is a state where the brain’s internal emotional thermostat is fundamentally struggling to regulate its baseline.

One of the most critical challenges we face in clinical practice is the distinct divergence between Bipolar I and Bipolar II—and the high frequency of misdiagnosis.

While Bipolar I is defined by highly visible manic episodes that operate at an intense, sometimes dangerous velocity, Bipolar II is far more subtle. It features hypomania—a state that often presents as highly functional, creative productivity.
