Hot Topic: Are you a people-pleaser?

Sometimes saying “yes” feels easier than saying “no.”

You might:
• Put everyone else’s needs before your own.
• Feel guilty when you set boundaries.
• Worry about disappointing people.
• Apologize even when you did nothing wrong.
• Say “I’m fine” when you’re really overwhelmed.
• Feel responsible for everyone else’s emotions.

But constantly putting yourself last can lead to stress, resentment, exhaustion, and burnout.

Setting a boundary doesn't mean you don't care.

Saying “no” doesn't make you selfish.

Taking care of yourself doesn't mean you're letting other people down.

Sometimes healing means learning that you can care about others without abandoning yourself!

September reminds us that things change.

The seasons change.
Our routines change.
Relationships change.
Our responsibilities change.
And sometimes, we change.

September is also a month that brings awareness to important issues affecting our mental and emotional well-being, including su***de prevention, recovery, healthy aging, childhood cancer, and many other causes. Awareness gives us an opportunity to slow down, notice, listen, and care.

Change isn't always easy. Sometimes we welcome it. Sometimes it happens without our permission. And sometimes we find ourselves grieving what used to be while trying to figure out what comes next.

But change can also create room for something new! Whether it be a new perspective, a healthier boundary, a different routine, a new beginning, or a chance to ask for help.

If September finds you in a season of transition, remember...

You don't have to know exactly where you're going to take the next step. If this is something we can assist you in navigating, we are here to lend support in your journey!

You are not a burden. Your story is not over. And you do not have to face a difficult season alone.

September is Su***de Awareness Month, a time to remind our community that reaching out can be an act of courage.

Sometimes emotional pain can become so overwhelming that it feels impossible to see beyond the moment. But feelings can change, circumstances can change, and support is available.

If you are struggling, please consider telling someone you trust:

- “I’m not doing okay.”
- “I need someone to listen.”
- “I don't know what to do right now.”

You don't have to know exactly what to say. Starting the conversation is enough.

If someone you care about is struggling, don't be afraid to ask, “Are you thinking about su***de?” Asking does not put the idea in someone's head. It can open the door to an honest conversation and help someone feel less alone.

There is hope. There is help. There is another step forward. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is admit, “I don't want to keep carrying this by myself.”

Going to counseling doesn't mean you're broken.

It doesn't mean you're weak.

And it doesn't mean you can't handle your own life.

It means you're willing to pause, reflect, grow, and take care of yourself.

Life can bring stress, grief, relationship struggles, anxiety, difficult transitions, or simply seasons when you feel stuck. You don't have to wait until everything falls apart before reaching out. Counseling can provide a space to talk openly, learn new tools, better understand yourself, and work toward the life and relationships you want.

Asking for help is an act of courage—not weakness!

If you've been thinking about reaching out, maybe this is your reminder that you don't have to do it all alone. Scottsville Counseling Center is here to walk alongside you.

The Sunday Scaries are real.

Do you ever notice that as Sunday evening rolls around, your mind suddenly starts racing about everything waiting for you on Monday?

The emails.
The responsibilities.
The to-do list.
The appointments.
The things you didn't get done this weekend.

That uneasy feeling has a name: the Sunday Scaries. And you're definitely not alone.

Here are a few gentle ways to make Sunday evening feel a little lighter:

- Prepare, don't overwhelm yourself. Choose a few things that will make Monday easier rather than trying to accomplish everything.

-Focus on what you can control. You don't have to solve the entire week tonight.

- Give your nervous system a chance to slow down. Try deep breathing, stretching, prayer, mindfulness, or a quiet activity.

- Create something to look forward to. A favorite meal, a relaxing shower, a movie, or time with someone you love can help your evening feel like yours again.

- Give yourself permission to rest. Rest isn't something you have to earn by finishing everything.

And remember: You don't have to carry the stress of the week before it even begins.

If Sunday anxiety is becoming overwhelming or affecting your everyday life, reaching out for support can be a meaningful first step. Scottsville Counseling Center is here to help you find peace, balance, and hope.

August is National Wellness Month!

At the Scottsville Counseling Center, we believe wellness is about more than simply getting through the day. It is about taking time to care for your mind, body, and spirit. August is a beautiful reminder to slow down, breathe, recharge, and make space for the things that help you feel grounded and whole.

Wellness can look different for everyone. Maybe it means setting a healthy boundary, getting enough rest, spending time outside, reconnecting with someone you love, making time for something you enjoy, or simply giving yourself permission to pause.

You don't have to wait until you're overwhelmed to prioritize yourself. Your emotional well-being matters!

This month, ask yourself:

- What does my mind need?
- What does my body need?
- What does my spirit need?
- What is one small thing I can do for myself today?

You matter. Your wellness matters. Make yourself a priority this August. Take care. You deserve it.

If wellness is something we can help you with, please reach out as we would be honored to work with you!
