Therapeutic body work is a central part of recovery for many survivors of abuse who also struggle with addiction, sexual compulsivity, dissociation, rage, bodily shame, and chronic stress-related physical distress. In this approach, the body is not secondary to the mind; it is one of the main places where trauma is stored, repeated, and potentially healed.

The overall aim is to help people recognize trauma-linked bodily patterns, tolerate safe closeness, tell the difference between nurturing touch and exploitative touch, recover embodied agency, and reconnect sensation with memory, meaning, and feeling. Holding, posture work, movement, massage, voice work, self-massage, and carefully paced positioning all contribute to that aim when used within a clear, boundaried, and trauma-informed frame.

In my latest article, "Therapeutic Body Work for Survivors of Abuse, Addiction, and Mental Health Struggles", I have outlined some of the central ideas and strategies behind the application of bodywork in its various forms to individuals experiencing emotional and physical symptoms resulting from childhood adversity, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, and exposure to parental substance abuse.
