The UW Medicine Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery prides itself in offering compassionate, state-of-the-art patient care alongside comprehensive teaching, training and research in the broad areas of disorders affecting the organs of communication. Our faculty practice at the region’s top facilities including the UW Medical Center, UW Medicine Eastside Specialty Clinic, North Wes

t Hospital, the VA Hospital, and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Our researchers are exploring and investigating a wide variety of topics including molecular and genetic profiles of oral cavity cancer, and vascular and lymphatic malformations. And our Staff, Residents, Fellows and collaborators are committed to carrying out our mission to provide excellence and leadership in all aspects of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. Our department programs were among 45 academic disciplines at UW ranked in the top 10 worldwide, according to a the most recent (2017) analysis by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). Audiology & speech-language pathology ranked 2nd, and Otorhinolaryngology ranked 10th. The CWUR Rankings by Subject highlights the world’s elite universities in the sciences and the social sciences, based on the number of research articles in top-tier journals.

Last week, we welcomed our newest interns during orientation! 🎉
It was a great opportunity for everyone to connect, learn more about our department, and get excited for the what lies ahead!

To wrap up the day, they teamed up for a campus scavenger hunt, exploring iconic places and spaces while getting to know their new surroundings. Here our some of their fun check-ins!

🚨Bootcamp: ACTIVATED🚨

Last week, UW Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery residents put their skills to the test at the 2026 Otolaryngology Emergencies Bootcamp at the Harborview WISH Lab.

From managing complex airway emergencies to performing surgical airways, rigid bronchoscopy, epistaxis management, ear surgery, tonsillectomy, suturing, and ultrasound-guided procedures, residents tackled the urgent scenarios they may encounter while on call through immersive, hands-on simulation training.
Simulation-based education prepares our residents for low-frequency, high-acuity events, building the confidence, technical skills, and clinical decision-making needed when every second counts.

We were also honored to welcome keynote speaker Dr. Kathleen Sie, whose expertise and dedication to education left this year’s participants inspired!

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible faculty volunteers for sharing their expertise and investing in the next generation of otolaryngologists. Your dedication makes experiences like this possible.

Congratulations to first author Joel Vaz, MSC and collaborators Taran Gujral, PhD, Emily Marchiano, MD, Cristina Rodriguez, MD, and Brittany Barber, MD, MSC on their publication in Nature Precision Oncology!

Their study, “Transcriptional states define dependencies and therapeutic vulnerabilities in head and neck cancer,” advances our understanding of the biological diversity of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and provides a framework for translating tumor biology into personalized treatment strategies.

By integrating transcriptomic data from 727 tumors, CRISPR dependency maps, and drug screening analyses, the team identified distinct tumor states and matched therapeutic vulnerabilities. The study also incorporated University of Washington patient cohorts and validated EGFR inhibitor responses in microtumor models generated directly from surgical resections.

This work represents an important step toward more effective, individualized treatment approaches for head and neck cancer.

🎓 Graduate Spotlight: Aish Shukla, MD

We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Aish Shukla as she graduates from our residency program and embarks on the next chapter of her career!

Dr. Shukla chose UW Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery because, as she shares, “I fell in love with the city and the residents when I came for my interview day. I also loved the broad surgical training across various sites and specialties.”

Her clinical and research interests include facial plastic surgery, wound healing outcomes, and facial nerve outcomes.

When asked about the most rewarding part of residency, Dr. Shukla reflected, “Seeing the progression of my technical and surgical skills from where I was as an intern to where I am now!”

We’re proud to celebrate Chief Resident Dr. Nada Ali!

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Ali chose UW OTO-HNS for its unique two-year research track, which gave her the opportunity to earn an MPH in Global Health while advancing her academic and clinical interests. She found a collaborative, hardworking team that supported her growth as both a researcher and surgeon.

During her residency, Dr. Ali has made meaningful contributions to resident education, multidisciplinary patient care, and departmental research initiatives, helping advance the field and improve outcomes for patients across the region, and beyond. 🌎
