[Marathon No. 4] San Francisco 2026 4:36:33 (2025: 4:29:10)
Restoring movement and building tissue capacity—so movement becomes medicine your body can handle.
On July 26, I crossed the finish line of The San Francisco Marathon for my 3rd consecutive year. It wasn’t a personal record, but I truly enjoyed every single mile on that course.
During this 28-week build starting back in January (with the BMO Vancouver Half as a mid-cycle check), I had to navigate right patellofemoral pain and an acute ankle sprain. As a chiropractor, I practiced exactly what I teach my patients every day: keeping the spine strong and mobile, adapting training load, prioritizing early functional mobilization, and staying consistent with targeted strength work.
Four years ago, I was out of breath after a single mile (~227 total miles in 2022). Building up to 840+ annual miles taught me that physical durability and mental discipline aren’t built when things go smoothly—they’re forged when you adapt through adversity.
Supported by High-Level Evidence & Clinical Research:
Neuroplasticity & Mood: Aerobic running elevates circulating BDNF and monoamines, supporting mood and executive brain function (Ross et al., 2019).
Pain Tolerance: Consistent endurance training activates central descending inhibitory pathways, raising pain tolerance (Xu et al., 2025).
Evidence-Based Rehab: High-level clinical data proves targeted hip/knee exercise and load management are first-line care for runner’s knee (JAMA 2023; BJSM 2024).
Sensorimotor Control: Systematic reviews show spinal manipulation alters afferent sensory input to enhance joint position sense and motor control (PRISMA Review 2026).
It doesn’t have to be a marathon. Find what you love—running, lifting, trail walks—and build a lifestyle around keeping your body capable. Health isn’t built in a single race; it’s a habit created one day at a time.
That’s what Activate Your Wellbeing means to us at Dr. Roy Jung, DC CCSP.
Grateful for everyone who supported the journey.
