We spend so much time thinking about big decisions.

Should I stay?
Should I leave?
Should I change careers?
Should I start something new?

But sometimes a better place to begin is much more ordinary.

What do I want my Tuesday to look like?
What time do I wake up?
Who do I see?
What kind of work am I doing?
How much time do I have?
When does work end?
Who am I with afterward?
What does it feel like to move through that day?

Then look at the Tuesday you’re living now.

Not to judge yourself.
Not to prove how far away you are.

Just to notice the gap.

Because once you can see what you want, you can start asking:

What would it take to get a little closer?

What if you stopped asking, “Should I leave?”

And asked:

“What do I want my Tuesday to look like?”

That question can give you much more useful information.

Maybe you want more time with your kids.
Maybe you want to finish work on time.
Maybe you want a slower morning.
Maybe you want more time with patients.
Maybe you want less clinical work and more teaching, coaching, or creative work.
Maybe you don’t actually want to leave medicine.
Maybe you want to leave behind the way you’re practicing medicine right now.

Three things to explore:

1. What does your ideal ordinary day actually look like?
2. What is different between that day and your current reality?
3. What would it take to close some of that gap?

You don’t have to solve it all at once.

Start by imagining another Tuesday.

What do you want your Tuesday to look like?

Not your dream vacation.
Not your retirement.
Not some imaginary life where every problem has disappeared.

Just… an ordinary Tuesday.

How do you want your morning to begin?
What do you want your workday to feel like?
Who do you want to see?
When do you want to be done?
What do you want your evening to look like?

It may sound like a boring question.

But it can tell you a lot about what you actually value.

Because when you can see the difference between the Tuesday you want and the Tuesday you’re currently living, you can start asking a much more useful question:

What would it take to get from here to there?

In Episode 244, we explore how imagining an ordinary, ideal day can help you identify what needs to change—whether that’s your workload, schedule, boundaries, clinical role, or even the kind of work you’re doing.

Three reasons to listen:
1. Get clearer on what you actually want your professional and personal life to look like.
2. Identify the gap between your current reality and your ideal day without using that gap as another reason to criticize yourself.
3. Start thinking creatively about what might need to change to move closer to the life you want.

You don’t have to figure out the whole path today.

Start with another Tuesday.

You left employed medicine.

But there’s a pattern I see women physicians bring with them into private practice:

If there’s a problem, I should be able to figure it out.

The documentation is clunky? You compensate.

The workflow doesn’t work? You add three steps.

Someone else could do it? It feels faster to do it yourself.

There’s a tool you don’t understand? Obviously you should learn everything about it.

And because you’re a physician, this works.

That’s the problem.

Your competence can keep a dysfunctional system running for a very long time.

It did in employed medicine.

Don’t let it do the same thing in the practice you built to give yourself more autonomy.

Before you solve the next annoying problem by working harder, ask:

How can I make this easier?

Not more impressive.
Not more sophisticated.
Not perfect.

Easier.

Because the goal isn’t simply to own a private practice.

It’s to build one that is sustainable, profitable, and doesn’t require you to recreate the job you worked so hard to leave.

If you keep finding yourself at the center of every problem in your practice, that’s exactly the kind of thing I look at in an Unlock Session.

Sometimes one conversation is enough to see what you couldn’t see from inside it.

You escaped the system.
But did you accidentally bring its love of unnecessary complexity into your private practice?

One of the strangest parts of becoming your own boss is realizing how many things you’re still doing simply because you’re accustomed to being the person who figures it out.

So here’s your back-to-school assignment:
How can I make this easier?

This episode will help you:
1. Identify friction you’ve stopped noticing.
2. Separate work that actually requires your physician expertise from work you’ve simply become accustomed to carrying.
3. Refresh the systems in your practice and life without turning the refresh into another perfectionism project.

You don’t need to rebuild everything.

Find one thing you repeatedly think, Ugh, I have to do this again.

Start there.

Then ask: Does this actually have to be this hard?

You left employed medicine so you could have more autonomy.
But somehow, you’re still making everything harder than it needs to be.

The complicated documentation system. The referral process only you understand. The errands you’re still squeezing between patients. The household tasks you automatically absorb. The workflow you keep tolerating because fixing it feels like one more thing to do.

This episode is your back-to-school refresh — without the pressure to reinvent your entire life.

Instead, I want you to start asking one deceptively simple question:

How can I make this easier?

Listen if you want to:
1. Find the repetitive work that is quietly draining energy from your practice.
2. Use tools, AI, delegation, and existing systems to remove work that does not require your physician brain.
3. Build routines that support the life and practice you actually have now — instead of proving how much you can carry.

You do not need another beautiful planner or a perfect new system.
You may just need to stop accepting unnecessary difficulty as the price of being competent.

Listen to the full episode, then pick one thing you’re going to make easier this week.
