Save this knee pain guide!

When you walk down stairs, your body weight transfers dynamically. If your joints aren’t tracking straight, your knees end up absorbing extra friction and stress.

​The first step to fixing the pain is awareness. Start with these two simple self-checks:

1️⃣ Do your knees and feet point straight ahead, or are they turning out/caving in?

2️⃣ Do your knees line up directly under your hips?

​Your body works as a unit. When you fix the alignment, you change the mechanics, and the pain disappears.

Not saying strengthing the muscles around your knee is a bad idea, it's just that doesn't usually fix the main reason your knees hurt in the first place.

Most likely, your body's alignment has been compromised. Your knee hurts because it's stuck between a dysfunctional hip and ankle joint. Maybe your knee doesn't point straight forward like it should. Maybe your pelvis is rotated so you put more strain on one leg when walking/running. Maybe one ankle is weak and collapsed so your knee caves in toward the other knee.

If you truly want to fix your knee for good, you have to address your whole body -

Meet Raj. With pain in his knees, he was told it was due to his age and arthritis. He was having a hard time keeping up with his wife on walks because of the pain. He loved to travel but because of his limited ability to walk, he was having a hard time enjoying it.

At his first Egoscue session he learned that his knees didn't hurt because of his age or his arthritis, but because his body's alignment was compromised. Look at his "Before" photos on the left. His feet and knees were significantly turned out and his whole body was tipping forward. After a few targeted corrective exercises, he walked out of his session already feeling less pain. After a few months of dedicated work his posture was transformed. More importantly, he was walking without pain and happily traveling again.

Why I do what I do 👇
This client complained about her hips hurting every time she got up from sitting or after standing for a while. She was a caregiver to her father for several months before he passed away and it really took a toll on her body.

Now she's committed to taking care of herself and already, after just our first session, she's feeling improvements! I love seeing people get excited about their life again after suffering from chronic pain for so long.

Spoiler alert: Forcing "perfect posture" isn't doing you any good.

Constantly sucking in your stomach or pinning your shoulders back just creates extra tension and fatigue throughout the day. Healthy alignment should feel natural and effortless, not exhausting!

This is why you aren't getting better 👇

1) Impatience.
Our expectations have evolved to match our fast paced modern environment and we expect instant results. The body doesn't work on that timeline. It probably took you years to develop your current condition. Long-lasting results require time and consistency.

2) Holding on to certainty.
Certainty can remove our sense of personal responsibility. If we have a definitive diagnosis there is a pre-established treatment plan that should work. If it doesn't, we can blame it on the medical establishment that "failed us." Too often, we anchor on that certainty and overlook the imbalances or lifestyle factors that caused our diagnosis to begin with.

3) "Fix Me" mentality.
When it comes to pain, there is a huge difference in outcomes between patients who choose the driver's seat and those who elect to sit passively in the passenger seat. If you actively engage in and take some responsibility for your pain treatment, you will have better outcomes.
