As a Research Scientist/Engineer, you will work alongside leading scientists and clinicians to perform advanced immunologic assays, contributing to laboratory operations, troubleshooting and optimizing assay performance, and serving as a technical resource and mentor for fellow team members.

Meet Dr. Brie Chun, a scientist working to change the future of breast cancer treatment.

As a Principal Investigator at the Cancer Vaccine Institute and a breast oncologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Dr. Chun is dedicated to advancing cancer research and patient care. Her research focuses on improving outcomes for patients with breast cancer, including triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), one of the most challenging subtypes to treat.

One of the biggest questions in cancer vaccine research is why some patients develop long-lasting immune protection while others do not.

In a recent commentary, Cancer Vaccine Institute’s Drs. John Liao and Nora Disis highlight two factors that may help predict durable anti-tumor immune responses following therapeutic cancer vaccination.

Patients with pre-existing immunity to the HER2 protein were more likely to develop stronger and longer-lasting HER2-specific T-cell responses after receiving the HER2-targeted vaccine. Additionally, strong T- cell responses just one month after vaccination were a powerful predictor of sustained immunity over time.

Understanding these immune signals could help scientists develop more effective cancer vaccines and may pave the way for more individualized immunotherapy approaches.

The Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI) is excited to announce that their Phase I trial of the WOKVAC cancer vaccine has been published in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer. The study demonstrated that the vaccine is safe, well tolerated, and generates a strong immune response.

WOKVAC is a DNA-based vaccine designed to target three antigens found at abnormally high levels in Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), a pre-invasive form of breast cancer that can become invasive cancer in 20% of patients.

In the Phase I trial, patients with non-metastatic breast cancer received three shots of WOKVAC and were followed annually for five years for long-term toxicity.

Results from this study showed that the vaccine was safe and generated the desired anti-cancer immune response. We plan to conduct Phase II clinical trials with WOKVAC for the treatment of DCIS, with the goal of intercepting invasive breast cancer before it develops.

We are one step closer to breast cancer prevention.

Last week, the Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI) welcomed US Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) for a behind-the-scenes look at how cancer vaccines are the future of cancer treatment and prevention.

During her visit, CVI researchers shared how vaccines are helping train the immune system to treat cancer and prevent recurrence. Congresswoman Jayapal learned how CVI studies suggest that cancer vaccines could intercept cancer at its earliest stages, offering lasting immunity and bringing us one step closer to cancer prevention.

CVI also discussed the importance of sustained public investment in research to help bring accessible, life-saving cancer vaccines to more people. We are working toward a future where cancer prevention becomes a reality.

Dr. Nora Disis, Director of the Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI), joined global leaders in cancer research at the annual American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) meeting.

At the Presidential Select Symposium, “Targeting Stage 0: Precision-Based Prevention,” she presented CVI’s research focused on vaccine-based approaches to prevent cancer.

She focused on preclinical and clinical trials that demonstrated how vaccines can train the immune system to recognize and intercept cancer at its earliest stages by generating T-cells, or immune cells. These immune cells recognize proteins expressed by precancerous and cancerous cells, traveling throughout the body to identify and eliminate abnormal cells.

Dr. Disis also shared updates on CVI’s vaccine-based efforts to intercept Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), a form of breast cancer often treated with surgery and radiation, along with preclinical findings on an anti-inflammatory vaccine strategy aimed at reducing obesity-associated cancer risk.

Together, these efforts reflect CVI’s commitment to advancing cancer treatment, prevention, and interception.

Dr. Dhillon participated in the Health domain, focusing on one of the most urgent opportunities in medicine: cancer prevention and treatment. She presented the bold prize concept of vaccines that prevent and treat cancer to the Brain Trust.
