Birthday Granola Yogurt Cookies

File Under: DIY Backpacking Breakfasts

I tend to lose muscle mass on multi-day wilderness trips because I don't eat enough protein to match my high exertion. The other problem is that I lose my appetite for meat. I can only eat so many meat sticks and biltong.

When Farmer Mark posted his Birthday Granola Yogurt Cookies in the Dehydrating Your Own Food Facebook Group, I knew I had to make them.

Adding Greek yogurt to birthday granola not only makes it blood sugar friendly but also adds protein! I love Greek Yogurt for this reason: it's high in protein.

My belly used to bloat from Greek Yogurt, but after going mostly keto and doing regular 36 hour fasts since 2021, I can now eat Greek Yogurt without any symptoms whatsoever. And nope, I don't usually stay keto on backpacking trips (more on this another time).

I LOVE birthday granola, but it's too sweet to eat in my regular life. When I'm backpacking, I go through carbs like a Hummer goes through gas, so I like to bring Birthday Granola to enjoy as a treat.

Thankfully, makes a gluten-free Birthday Granola that I can find at !

My go-to backpacking breakfast has been 2 meat sticks and 2 Bobo's Bars. The Bobo's Bars are not a protein source.

Now I can just eat a Birthday Granola Yogurt Cookie!

These are super easy to make and nearly fool proof. I made 2 different batches with different ratios. You can play around with the ratios.

Here's how I made my second batch:

Mix equal parts plain non-fat Greek yogurt with Birthday Granola. You can sweeten your yogurt with vanilla and stevia before mixing in the granola. The dehydrator does make yogurt taste more sour. I dehydrated in my at 130 for about 17-18 hours, but time will depend on size of cookies and humidity.

p.s. The Wendy's Eating Husband 🍟 doesn't like these. 😆

gimme all the summer pie

but only if it's whole foods based, sugar free, minimally sweetened, and like this blackberry pie here is

gluten-free blackberry pie made with a flour crust

The filling can be made by using tapioca instead of a pinch of gelatin. I became very allergic to tapioca and gelatin was the best substitute for me. The teff crust is based off my vegan pie crust recipe on the archerfriendly blog. But I put butter in this particular pie crust. Cause I can't have tree nuts anymore and I have to be reeeal careful with the pumpkin seeds. So what's left to put in my pie crust but the cow buttah. 🐄

To make the filling, I followed the recipe on my blog for Blueberry Blackberry Pie, but only used blackberries of course!

I made up the recipe and wrote it down on cardstock, like I always do. Somehow I think the thicker piece of paper will prevent me from losing it. I should use Gmail to write down my recipes, because then I can type in a search box rather than rustling through multiple paper piles.

This pic was snapped during a 14+ mile hike. I had a huge fatigue flare right before. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to do it, as I often am. I hiked in pouring rain, light rain, and snow. It was wet and cold. But I was comfortable most of the time.

When I got home that night and pulled off my mountaineering boots, I noticed that I had a reactive arthritis flare in my toes. They were red, hot, swollen, and painful. For me, an arthritis flare often follows a fatigue flare, so it made sense. I haven't had an arthritis flare in MONTHS and here I was hiking 14+ miles in the mountains, full of joy, with an arthritis flare in my toes. This made me cry, like I often do after being in the mountains. It's getting to witness this pure beauty combined with a deep wonder that my body can do this, despite.

I fully believe in the healing power of nature and the healing power of movement, despite whatever ails you. So I will keep on climbing the mountains, despite. This medicine is healing me.

Mama Crow taught me how to make a good pumpkin pie

this is the archerfriendly version: without sugar, gluten, eggs, or dairy

I know, I know... how is it even a pumpkin pie without all the things that make a pumpkin pie!? I don't know! It doesn't even have REAL pumpkin in it. Haha. It has REAL BUTTERNUT SQUASH INSTEAD! Because Mama Crow taught me the secret to a delicious pumpkin pie: use butternut squash instead of the pumpkin. So much more pumpkin-y flavor!

this pie is MAGIC

even the Wendy's Eating Husband likes it. (I don't make no separate Wendyman pie for him anymore. I used to. But he's not a big pie fan anyway.)
This recipe was featured on the Feedfeed website! It's also on the blog, with a cute little write up.

I make the filling super smooth in my Vitamix

p.s. Mama Crow is my mom. She loves crows. I do not.
