What does a pot of soup, a hairbrush, and a home remodel have in common??
A chiro revival, that’s what!
I dropped these super unhelpful hints in last week’s post and it was fun to hear your guesses. 😜 Today, I’m going to fill you in on the beginning of the rest of our lives! Drop an emoji in the comments if you’re ready!
I’m going to take you back to 2016. I’m a father of two in a quaint, 1920’s home near Seattle on a gloomy fall afternoon. My beautiful wife is home with the kids, working on removing some box braids from my 5-year-old Ethiopian daughter’s hair, while simmering a pot of soup on the stove top. I come home from work to the cartoons blasting, barely drowning out the tears. My daughter is sitting in the salon chair in the living room with half her braids removed. My wife is standing in the kitchen with a wet face.
Naturally I assumed that my ladies were arguing about the hair (if you have tight, natural curls, I know you feel me on this!), but tonight it was something entirely different.
“I can’t take out her braids.
I can’t stir the soup.
I can’t text.
I can’t even brush my own hair.
It hurts too bad!”
You see, a few month’s prior, her medical doctor had diagnosed her with Carpal Tunnel. She was told to wear a brace, limit use of her wrist, and if that didn’t work, schedule surgery. As a hairstylist, that was the last thing she wanted. But after the day’s events, I could see the defeat in her face. And my heart broke for her.
The next day at work, I was venting to my boss (who also happened to be my best friend) about the situation. We were in the middle of remodeling a client’s beachfront property. We were up on ladders, installing drywall, and honestly…I wasn’t even aware that the homeowner was there, let alone overhearing our conversation. He apologized for listening in, but then he said the last thing I expected to hear…
Tomorrow I’ll share with you part 2 of this story, so if you’re as emotionally invested as I am, hit that notification bell under my bio so that you don’t miss the next post!
