On Substack, I published a poem about my experiences during a healing retreat. I wish for the poem to speak for itself and I also wish to name that the poem names and inhabits many tensions, including the legacy of colonization, without trying to resolve them into a simple moral. We are humans who seek healing and some of us see to heal others, and amidst that we live in the histories of great harms that continue to this day. I seek a wholeness that faces all of these truths, and in facing them, I find myself unable to resolve them.

The urge to make someone all-good or all-bad doesn't help us actually address harm and build resilient community. Neither does the urge to dismiss and invalidate the opinions of people who are critical of what we're building. What matters is staying engaged through the problem.

It's important that we learn to tell our own stories and develop a sense of self that lets us center our experience and speak what is true. But it's also important that we learn how to recognize every other person we meet is doing the same thing. More at:
