"Our ideals are always aspirational, but we can get confused and instead see people as deficient and unacceptable for not already living in that ideal state. ... How lovely it would be if we first accepted our humanity, and then turned toward our ideals for guidance."

"Once we've tasted life as we imagine it could be, the disappointments of life as it is feel sharper. We may also be caught in situations where our ideals are not enough to protect us from harm. Is it that our ideals are unworkable? Were we simply too naive?"

"When offered in right measure, idealism is a balm to the soul that allows it to offer its gifts to the world. Our ideals offer a vision of possibility so inspiring—and in our imaginations so tangible—that we're willing to test our self-imposed limitations to discover our true abilities."

On Substack, I published a poem about my experiences during a healing retreat. I wish for the poem to speak for itself and I also wish to name that the poem names and inhabits many tensions, including the legacy of colonization, without trying to resolve them into a simple moral. We are humans who seek healing and some of us see to heal others, and amidst that we live in the histories of great harms that continue to this day. I seek a wholeness that faces all of these truths, and in facing them, I find myself unable to resolve them.
