New Episode on The Vida Vitality Podcast with Guest, Ashley Koff, RD

Weight loss isn’t the goal — weight health is. In this new episode of the Vida Vitality Podcast, Dr. Michelle Leary sits down with Ashley Koff, RD, USA Today bestselling author of Your Best Shot: The Personalized System for Optimal Weight Health―GLP-1 Shot or Not, to break down what’s actually happening in your gut when you’re on a GLP-1 agonist — and why digestion, not the injection, is the real foundation of lasting results.

Ashley has more than 25 years of clinical nutrition experience, founded The Better Nutrition Program, serves as nutrition course director for the UC Irvine Integrative Health Institute and Functional Medicine Fellowship, and sits on the board of the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute alongside Dr. Leary.

In this conversation, she unpacks the physiology behind semaglutide, tirzepatide, and retatrutide, why she calls GLP-1s “the sprinkles, not the cake,” and the three free things anyone can do today to start optimizing their digestion and weight health.

Knee pain when you bend it?

That little “catch” or ache when you bend down for the laundry basket, the dog leash, the kid’s shoe — yeah, we see you.

It’s easy to write off small pain until it’s not small anymore. A PT or Chiropractor can find the muscle imbalances and joint dysfunction to get to the root of the problem, rather than just masking the pain with medication.

Schedule an assessment with your Vida PT or Chiropractor!

You wipe down the counters, run a load of laundry, and refill the hand soap. It feels like an act of care – and it is. But somewhere between the citrus scent and the streak-free shine, a quieter exchange may be taking place, one your body registers long before you do.

Your hormones are listening.

Household products are one of the few hormone-relevant exposures you can control directly — swapping daily-use items like hand soap, dish soap, and laundry detergent offers the highest-leverage change.

What if your body isn’t “sugar sensitive” — it’s just... full? 🏠

Picture your cells as houses. Every time you eat, insulin knocks on the door and says “energy’s here — let it in.” Your body uses that energy to fuel your muscles, your brain, everything you’re trying to do today.

But when more energy comes in than your body can use — through food, stress, or just not moving enough — glucose keeps piling up. The house fills. And fills. Until the door won’t open anymore.

That’s insulin resistance. It’s not a willpower problem. It’s a full house.

On this episode of the Vida Vitality Podcast, Dr. Michelle Leary sits down with Kalea Wattles, ND, FMCP-M to break down why insulin resistance is one of the most common sources of oxidative stress they see in patients — and how it quietly shows up as fertility struggles, fatigue, and stalled progress, no matter how “good” you’re eating.

Rest is the first instruction after surgery. It shouldn’t be the only one.

The first 24–48 hours post-op are for recovery and protection. After that, staying still too long can let muscles guard, joints stiffen, and tissue heal in patterns that take longer to unwind. Healing well depends on movement — introduced at the right time, in the right amount, under the direction of your surgical and rehab team.

That’s the work of a physical therapist.

This patient came to us recovering from abdominal surgery. Saara Mohammed, MScPT at Vida Kirkland built a personalized treatment plan designed to carry her to full function — not just to the point of getting through the day. That’s the difference between managing a recovery and finishing one.

If you’re post-op or heading into surgery, a physical therapy consult is worth scheduling early. Link in bio.

There is so much noise around food. What you should eat and what you shouldn’t. 🍊

Fruit gets blamed for blood sugar spikes — but it’s actually one of the most nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich foods you can eat.

Kalea Wattle, ND, FMCP-M breaks down why: clinical trials show patients in the highest quartile for fruit and veggie intake have the shortest time to conception. Translation — eating more colorful produce can make it easier to get pregnant.

Her actual advice? Don’t avoid fruit. Pair it with fat, fiber, and protein to blunt the glucose response — especially if you’re working on metabolic health.

Root cause, not restriction. That’s the Vida approach.
