Empowering Guatemalan communities to live healthier lives We are a 501c3 non-profit organization.

We are a group of health workers, engineers, teachers, administrators, college students and kids, working to help improve the health of a group of villages in the Departamento Izabal in Guatemala. We started in 2008 and continue to return with teams of volunteers twice a year. At each visit we update community assessments, conduct health care screenings, provide clinical care and health education and work at ongoing village improvement projects.

Last weekend GVH hosted a brunch for all of our trip alumni from the past 15 years! These are the amazing volunteers who have traveled with us on our medical trips to Guatemala - sharing their time, effort, and medical expertise (some have been on as many as six trips!)

Our trip alumni joined in to make tortillas and plátanos maduros, and enjoyed connecting with old pals and meeting new ones. There were alumni from as long ago as 2013 and others who just returned from our trip a couple weeks ago. We shared lots of memories and conversation. Program Director, Jennifer, provided an update regarding our programs in Guatemala and hopes for the future.

Not every important moment in healthcare looks dramatic.

Sometimes it looks like talking about how much sugar is in soda or checking temperature. Measuring oxygen levels. Talking with someone about how they’ve been feeling. Noticing something that deserves a closer look.

Screening and preventive care are an important part of Guatemala Village Health’s work because healthcare isn’t only about treating illness after it happens.
It’s also about paying attention earlier.

Guatemala Village Health is looking for a new Treasurer! If you are passionate about helping others and improving the wellbeing of whole communities, this is your sign to join us. We are looking for someone who is comfortable with finances, preferably with bookkeeping experience and able to commit 4-6 hours a month with us. This is a great opportunity to share your skills and make a bigger impact while collaborating with like-minded people.

A simple social media post can have a ripple effect.

Last week, after seeing one of our posts, a woman in the U.S. reached out with an urgent question. A family she knew had a baby in a remote community near Río Dulce who was struggling to breathe. They had no transportation, few resources, and didn't know where to turn.

While Guatemala Village Health doesn't provide medical care in that area, we were able to point them toward the nearest public health center and the regional hospital—helping connect a family to care they may not have known was available.
Sometimes our impact isn't only the care we provide directly.

Sometimes it's knowing the communities, the healthcare system, and the people who can help.
That's why sharing our work matters. Every post has the potential to reach someone who needs information, support, or hope.

A few minutes spent learning how to brush teeth properly can help prevent pain, missed school days, and future dental problems.

Our volunteers work alongside local communities to make these lessons engaging, memorable, and fun.

We're thrilled to announce the appointment of our first-ever local health promoters from Livingston!

On Monday, Guatemala Village Health and Iseri Ibagari joined forces to host a health fair in Livingston, Guatemala. Those in attendance checked in and passed through four education-based stations: H. pylori, diabetes, blood pressure, and nutrition. If needed, they also saw a doctor and got medications from our pharmacy. Children waiting for their parents played, drew, and discussed the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods. Our new health promoters received bags filled with health supplies, hygiene packs, and first aid supplies. Special thanks for Ingrid, the director of Isegui Ibagari, for collaborating with us to organize this health fair!

Livingston is located on the Caribbean coast and is home to the biggest Garífuna community in Guatemala. Iseri Ibagai, founded by Ingrid, is a health center which has served the Livingston community for decades. The main focus of the center is treating and preventing HIV/AIDS, as well as reducing the stigma around it. We are excited and honored to continue collaborating with Iseri Ibagari and continue furthering our impact in Guatemala.

We love the kids in our partner communities! We have been busy helping the youngest members of these communities thrive by attending to medical concerns, tracking their growth, and of course, giving out gold stars. Through our work, we hope to empower these children and teach them about their health as they grow up to be leaders and shape the future of their communities.

Many of these photos showcase our Healthy Babies program, which aims to give babies and children the best possible start in life. This includes applying fluoride to their teeth, giving them albendazole to treat parasites and vitamin a, vaccinating them, and tracking their growth and development by measuring their weight and height.

This trip we also treated two children with medical concerns. When a toddler experienced his first asthma attack, he was given an inhaler to relax his airways and begin to treat his inflammation, with a local health promoter giving him follow-up treatment. After a big stick got stuck in the leg of an older boy over a month ago, it did not heal and got infected. Our skilled medical team drained his abscess and drew a line around the edge of the hard swelling to see if it got any bigger, and gave him antibiotics to heal the infection.

It is thanks to our volunteers, supporters, local community leaders, and most of all our incredible team that we are able to collaborate with villages to improve health, one village at a time. Thank you to everyone involved!

Our July clinics are officially underway! Yesterday we hosted a clinic in our building in Chinachabilchoch, serving the communities of Chinachabilchoch and Saquiquib. We saw 60 patients and weighed, measured, and vaccinated 49 children and infants. Alongside our medical clinic, our dedicated team of school volunteers handed out toothbrushes and toothpaste to 70 children and had a tooth brushing party!

Towards the end of the clinic day, a woman came in with complaints of abdominal pain and an abnormally high heart rate. She appeared to have a stomach flu and extreme dehydration, so our team moved fast and got her on an IV to improve her hydration. By the end of the night, our team had diagnosed it as dysentery, and gave her medications to take home.
