Early Detection Can Make a Difference.

Changes in hearing don't always happen suddenly.

Sometimes the first signs are subtle:
👂 Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
👂 Difficulty hearing conversations
👂 Trouble understanding speech
👂 Dizziness or balance concerns

Routine hearing monitoring can identify changes early—even before they're noticeable in everyday life. This helps your healthcare providers understand how treatment may be affecting your hearing and determine the best next steps. Guidelines emphasize monitoring before, during, and after treatment because hearing changes can continue even after medication ends.

Are You Taking Medications That May Affect Your Hearing?

Some life-saving medications can also impact hearing or balance.

You may benefit from Ototoxicity Monitoring if you're receiving:
• Chemotherapy (such as cisplatin)
• Certain IV antibiotics
• Other medications known to carry hearing-related side effects

Our audiologists work alongside your medical team to monitor your hearing throughout treatment, helping identify changes as early as possible so you have the information you need. Ototoxicity monitoring is commonly recommended for patients receiving certain chemotherapy drugs, aminoglycoside antibiotics, and other treatments with known hearing risks.

❤️ Sometimes, it's the smallest sounds that mean the most.

For Susan, it wasn't a grand moment—it was hearing a simple, everyday sound that she hadn't realized she'd been missing.

After addressing her hearing loss, that familiar sound became an emotional reminder of just how much she'd been missing.

Stories like Susan's remind us that better hearing isn't just about hearing more—it's about reconnecting with the people, moments, and experiences that make life meaningful. If you or someone you love has been putting off a hearing evaluation, Susan's story is one you won't want to miss.

Some Medications Can Affect Your Hearing.

Did you know that certain medications used to treat cancer, serious infections, and other medical conditions can sometimes affect your hearing or balance?
This is called ototoxicity.

At Northwest Hearing + Tinnitus, our Ototoxicity Monitoring Program helps establish a hearing baseline before treatment begins and monitors your hearing throughout your medical journey. Detecting changes early allows your healthcare team to make informed decisions while protecting your long-term hearing whenever possible. Clinical guidelines recommend baseline testing before or as close as possible to the start of treatment and ongoing monitoring for patients receiving higher-risk medications.

If you're preparing to start treatment, ask your physician if hearing monitoring is right for you.

Welcoming the Next Generation of Tinnitus Specialists

This summer, we had the pleasure of welcoming Eliza Rushlow from the University of Wisconsin–Madison to Northwest Hearing + Tinnitus!

Eliza recently completed her summer clinical rotation with Dr. Leah Samuels at our Seattle clinic, where she spent the past several weeks learning from our team of tinnitus specialists. This fall, she'll begin her third year of her four-year Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program and hopes to specialize in tinnitus treatment.

We were honored that Eliza traveled all the way to the Pacific Northwest to gain hands-on experience with our team and deepen her knowledge of evidence-based tinnitus care.

Thank you, Eliza, for spending your summer with us! We wish you continued success as you pursue your passion for helping patients with tinnitus and hearing health. We can't wait to see all you'll accomplish in your career!

At Northwest Hearing + Tinnitus, we're proud to mentor future audiologists and help shape the next generation of compassionate, evidence-based hearing and tinnitus care.
