At some hospitals and hospices, the bed itself widens for a final goodbye, letting a loved one lie beside a dying patient.

These specialist “cuddle beds” are used in Britain and Australia to preserve physical closeness during end-of-life care.

Unlike standard clinical beds, they expand toward double width while retaining medical positioning and safety features.

North Devon Hospice introduced one in September 2024, giving families room to lie together.

In Queensland, Oakey Hospital received its first in November 2025, followed by Toowoomba Hospital’s oncology unit in February 2026.

Queensland Children’s Hospital later received its first after A$24,000 in donated funding paid for the equipment.

British hospices report prices around £15,000 to £20,000 per bed.

For families, the result is simple but profound, sharing a bed, holding hands, talking, resting, and saying goodbye without a rail between them.

Sometimes compassionate care is measured in inches of closeness.
