Is it possible to be a kind, caring, giving person without letting others impose upon you or take advantage?
YES!
It’s all about boundaries.
Some people will assume that if you’ve been generous to them before, they are entitled to your continued generosity and will attack you if you don’t ‘give’ what they want.
That’s why you need to develop a tough hide like Mama Bear. She sets her own limits, and nobody pushes her around!
If ever there was a Rune to represent the sacred feminine virtues of fertile resilience, flexible endurance, and indestructible persistence, it is the 18th Rune of the Elder Futhark:
Berkano – Rune of Nurturing, Natural Boundaries, & the Earth Goddess
Your empathy and compassion should never be mistaken for weakness or obligation. You can care and still say “no” without guilt. Nobody has the right to demand you sacrifice your energy or resources for their self-indulgence.
This is the dilemma of the Divine Feminine.
Women who are built to create, to nurture, to care, and to heal are also incalculably strong.
Holding the keys to life means one must also turn those powers inward at times – to thrive, endure, adapt, and master the ability to define yourself as the ‘Wild Mother’ without whom human existence ends.
Whatever needs nurturing, and whoever is capable of nurturing - both fall under the auspices of Berkano.
This is the ‘Mother Earth Rune’ – the ultimate symbol of creativity, whether in spawning life or art. Berkano teaches that self-expression through creation is as essential a force for well-being as physical rest and good nutrition.
The regenerating goddess-force of Berkano gives us direct access to the limitless invigorating current of Nature.
This energy supports the curiosity of our inner child and teaches us these important lessons:
• Respect yourself and your wild, untamed spirit.
• Regard your precious heart as holy.
• Give trust only to those who deserve it.
• Choose yourself unapologetically – to preserve your autonomy.
Runic Practice:
To align with the Rune of Nurturing and Natural Boundaries, try these Regenerative Routines:
• The Birch Bark Barrier Visualization: When you feel someone assuming that they are entitled to your energy or imposing upon your kindness - close your eyes and visualize your skin becoming like the bark of a birch tree. It is bright, beautiful, and flexible, but it is also incredibly tough, water-resistant, and deflects away anything that’s harmful to you. By doing this, you are creating a ‘boundary’. Instead of building a stone wall, you are growing a protective, living layer that allows you to be wild and natural while safeguarding your energy.
• The Mama Bear “No” Daily Boundary Drill: You don’t need permission to set limits. Once a day, practice an ‘Unapologetic No’. It needn’t be confrontational. It can be saying "no" to a minor social obligation or a digital distraction. You can even be playful about it. Do it with the quiet, heavy confidence of a ‘Mother Bear’. You don’t explain yourself – you simply define your territory. Notice how ‘Choosing Yourself’ actually increases your capacity to care for those who do deserve your trust and attention.
• The Earth-Current Meditation: For those experiencing a big change, reversal, or loss, use these steps to find quiet healing. Sitting on the floor (or better yet, outside on the ground), visualize the Berkano Rune glowing at the base of your spine. Imagine a ‘limitless invigorating current’ of deep green light rising from deep within the earth. See this light filling your Precious Heart. As it fills you, see it pushing out the ‘Dissonance’ and ‘Disrespect’ of the world. Whisper to yourself: "I am fertile soil. I am the source. I choose my own growth."
Bonus BindRune:
Labeling a space with a bindrune that blends nurturing Berkano with fiery, creative Kenaz creates a warm, transformative energy within a grounded, protected enclosure. This encourages balanced and active creativity with steady development. It’s an ideal Talisman for creatives (artisans, writers, students) who need focused, continuous inspiration in a safe, secure environment.
People Properties:
Berkano people are creative and empathetic, generating an aura of warm support within which others feel encouraged and comforted. While their caring, maternal personality may be gentle, it can also be as fierce as a mother defending her young. They are also a stable, grounded force for growth and renewal within their communities. Berkano people are natural nurturers and are a great fit for careers in early childhood education, nursing or midwifery, food service, social work, community organizing, and creative pursuits in the arts or horticulture.
Berkano Affirmations:
“My relationships are built on mutual esteem and kindness. My imagination is limitless! I gratefully channel the healing love of ‘Mother Nature’. I will not tolerate disrespect.”
RuneTip:
When you are going through a hard ‘reset’ after a difficult event (job change, relocation, loss of close relationship, injury, etc.) you can use Berkano to carve out a safe space for recuperation, detox, and quiet healing, allowing you to tap into the boundless regenerating power of the earth itself.

A Postscript from the RuneQueen:
“Why the Elder Futhark and Why Now?”
‘RuneNotes’ is a weekly mini-MasterClass for people seeking knowledge and empowerment from the ancient wisdom of the Elder Futhark Runes, which have millennia of human history behind them.
According to Norse myth, Runes originally came to humankind from Odin himself as a set of holy mysteries and secret wisdom.
Their usage in human history goes back more than two thousand years. Runic alphabets evolved within various cultures so that now they exist in several forms.
The Elder Futhark traces back to ancient peoples of the Nordic and Northern European regions. My family background gave me a comfortable familiarity with Runes as a youth and in recent years I've been working much more intimately with the Elder Futhark.
My focus is on sharing what I've learned from my beloved Elder Futhark and encouraging others to: "Unlock Ancient Wisdom & Embrace Your Power”.
I'm based in Northern California/USA and thus influenced and tuned in to the natural world of the Northern Hemisphere and the cycles of nature as they manifest in these latitudes.
