It's 9 PM and someone in your house has a fever. Do you wait it out, drive to urgent care, or head to the ER?
Most people guess. And guessing usually means either four hours in an ER waiting room you didn't need, or waking up to something that got worse overnight.
I wrote a plain-English guide to help you make that call fast. It covers:

✅ What actually counts as a fever (the 100.4°F line)

✅ When home care is enough, and when it isn't

✅ The red flags that mean skip urgent care and go straight to the ER

✅ Why a fever in an infant, an older adult, or someone with diabetes follows different rules
Most fevers belong at home or in a same-day visit, not the ER. Knowing which is which saves you time, money, and a lot of stress.

If you're in Sebring or Lake Wales, we offer same-day walk-ins that put you in front of a physician who already knows your history. Call (863) 236-9550.

Shorter alternate (copy-paste):
🌡️ Fever at 9 PM: wait it out, urgent care, or ER?
The right answer depends on more than the number on the thermometer. Age, how long it's lasted, and what else is going on all change the call.
My new guide breaks it into three simple tiers, plus the red flags that mean go to the ER now.

Heads up for folks in Highlands County and around Polk County. Watson Clinic and Orlando Health are opening a brand new hospital campus down in south Lakeland this summer. Three buildings on Lakeland Highlands Road.

It is a big deal. Over 300 inpatient beds, 69 emergency and observation room beds, 11 operating rooms, plus labor and delivery and advanced stroke and spine care. The medical office building next door (Parkway Medical Center) is bringing in specialists for cardiology, OB-GYN, orthopedics, urology, and pediatrics. OB-GYN starts taking appointments June 15. The address is 4000 Lakeland Highlands Road if you want to look it up.

Good thing to know about if you or a family member ever needs the kind of care a hospital provides.

Educational only; talk to your clinician.

How to Check Blood Sugar Properly: Best Times, Target Numbers, CGM vs Fingerstick, and Common Mistakes
Dr. Kulmeet Kundlas explains how to properly monitor type 2 diabetes by understanding what blood sugar readings mean, when to check them, and common pitfalls. He compares home fingerstick testing, continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) with a 10–15 minute lag and possible compression errors, hemoglobin A1C as a 3–4 month lagging indicator that hides extremes, and ketone testing (especially for type 1 and SGLT2 inhibitor users). Key targets include fasting/pre-meal 80–130 and 2-hour post-meal (timed from the first bite) ≤180, with bedtime checks particularly important for patients on insulin or sulfonylureas to avoid nocturnal hypoglycemia and the Somogyi effect. He outlines individualized A1C goals, symptoms of hypo/hyperglycemia and DKA, when to call a doctor vs go to the ER, the rule of 15 for low sugar, and proper fingerstick technique and strip storage.
