Science allows for the constant flow of ideas and ever changing theory! And when theory changes, we adapt! I also think it's important to stay up to date on the latest information in order to relay accurate information to clients.
Van der Kolk theorized trauma was "stored" in the body. The new theory proposes that our brain gets stuck, constantly predicting danger. Our body responds as a messenger, not an archive.
I love this, because it means we're not STUCK with our trauma, we're just rigid. Therefore, we must find ways to gain flexibility through positive experiences!!
Flow states are great for that and examples include: "surfing, dancing, climbing, music, athletics, immersive creative work."
"The framework opens up genuinely exciting possibilities for trauma treatment. It may help explain why so many seemingly different interventions can facilitate healing: EMDR, mindfulness, exercise, psychedelic-assisted therapy, somatic approaches, relational safety, movement practices, or creative immersion." And I'll add massage and sound to that list!
Although this work is preliminary, I'm excited for it!
A provocative new paper challenges the idea that “the body keeps the score.” But does it actually refute it?
