How often do we ask the question, "how are you doing" and just accept when someone responds with, "I'm fine."? It's always been a curious thing to me that as a healthcare professional we keep our mental health challenges to ourselves. We don't want to pry into our colleagues lives or we don't want to be embarrassed if we are wrong in our observations. Why? Stigma? Fear of not being seen as competent? Fear of rejection? Asking a follow up question such as "no, really, how are you" could mean the difference between someone continuing to suffer in silence versus seeing possibilities in that one connection. We need to support each other and remind ourselves that healthcare providers are human beings, not human doings. Our quality of life can make a difference in quality of care for those we treat. Check in on your colleagues. It's one risk you'll want to take!

What is the number one reason that we don't seek mental health counseling?

According to the majority of research, "STIGMA" is what keeps us from accessing help. There are fears about being seen as weak, incompetent, even unaware or uneducated. Suffering from mental health issues has nothing to do with how smart we are, by the way. So, what perpetuates "STIGMA"?
