United Way of Selma & Dallas County Receives Grant from The Daniel Foundation of Alabama to Expand Diabetes Care at Doc On the Spot Free Clinic
SELMA, Ala. – United Way of Selma & Dallas County is proud to announce it has received a generous grant from The Daniel Foundation of Alabama to enhance diabetes care services at the Doc On the Spot Free Clinic. The funding will provide diabetic testing for approximately 400 uninsured patients in Dallas County, helping improve disease management and overall health outcomes.
For the first time in the clinic's 15-year history, patients living with diabetes will have access to routine monitoring services that are critical to managing this chronic disease. In addition to regular testing, patients will receive personalized education and dietary guidance designed to help them better understand and control their condition.
"With this grant, we will be able for the first time to offer our diabetic patients routine testing to monitor their disease and outline educational and dietary plans to give them the best chances of managing their disease," said Jeff Cothran, Executive Director of United Way of Selma & Dallas County. "This investment allows us to move beyond simply treating illness and toward helping our patients live healthier, longer lives through prevention, education, and consistent monitoring."
The Doc On the Spot Free Clinic is a collaborative partnership between United Way of Selma & Dallas County and UAB Selma Family Medicine, with clinic space generously provided by the Fathers of St. Edmund. For the past 15 years, the clinic has provided free primary medical care to uninsured residents of Dallas County, ensuring that financial barriers never prevent patients from receiving quality healthcare. Patients are never charged for any medical services delivered through the program.
The clinic's impact is strengthened through another United Way initiative, HealthLink, which provides prescription medication assistance for eligible Doc On the Spot patients. Together, the clinic and HealthLink create a comprehensive, wraparound healthcare system that combines primary care, chronic disease management, prescription assistance, and patient education.
The Daniel Foundation grant represents another important step in addressing the growing burden of diabetes in the Black Belt region and ensuring that uninsured residents have access to the preventive care they need.
