π΄ Meet the Herd Monday: Schooner (Retired)
Schooner is one of our beloved retired therapy horses here at The Saddle Light Center.
Born in 1997, this handsome Palomino Quarter Horse gelding came to SLC from Austin, Texas in 2007. Before joining us, Schooner worked in a program focused on team building, emotional support, overcoming fears, improving focus, and relieving stress.
He was such a favorite that clients even sent him letters of thanks to his very own mailbox. π
Schooner also became famous for his special trick β turning his head sideways for what we like to call βSchooner kisses.β Although, we suspect he was really hoping for an extra treat or two! π
One of Kerstin's favorite stories about Schooner is that when he first arrived at SLC, he didn't really understand that horses were supposed to walk while carrying a rider. During the first five years of his life, Schooner's job involved standing quietly while people groomed, brushed, and interacted with him during team-building activities.
As Kerstin likes to joke, "Schooner's favorite gait is standing still." π΄π
It took time, patience, and training to teach him to carry a saddle and rider, but he eventually became an outstanding therapy horse and spent 17 years helping riders overcome challenges and reach their goals.
Today, Schooner enjoys retirement in his special "condo" pen near the herd, where he still receives plenty of love, treats, hugs, and visits from riders and volunteers.
He gave so much to our program β now it's our turn to take care of him. ππ΄
β¨ Join us next Monday as we conclude our Meet the Herd series by introducing our final retired herd member and celebrating the legacy of the horses who helped build The Saddle Light Center.
πΈ Do you have photos or memories of Schooner from over the years? We'd love to see them! Share your favorite pictures and/ or stories in the comments below so we can celebrate this special boy together. π
