The Saddle Light Center For Therapeutic Horsemanship

The Saddle Light Center For Therapeutic Horsemanship The Saddle Light Center for Therapeutic Horsemanship is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation located in Selma, TX at Retama Equestrian Center.

We help to build the self-esteem and quality of life for special needs individuals within Bexar County and surrounding areas through equine-assisted activities. As a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (P.A.T.H.) organization, we provide therapeutic horseback riding and hippotherapy to individuals with special needs within the San Antonio area with the goal of contributing positiv

ely to their cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being as to inspire them to accomplish things previously considered beyond their capabilities. Since our founding in 1991, through the generosity of our Sponsors and Volunteer workforce, we have grown from a few horses to a program that now provides equine therapy to 60 plus riders each week with a team of 13 horses. Through this program, the Saddle Light Center is committed to improving the self-esteem and quality of life of the disabled population in the San Antonio area. Our mission is to provide equestrian therapy for children, teenagers, and adults with neurological, orthopedic, learning, emotional or other disabilities. Our goal is to inspire our riders to accomplishments previously considered beyond their capabilities.

πŸ΄πŸ˜‚ Silly Friday

We've almost made it to the end of our first full week of summer sessions, and Trooper and Magoo wanted to share a little encouragement before we wrap up the week.

🐴 Trooper: "Great job everyone! We made it through the first week back!"

🐴 Magoo: "Believe in yourself!" πŸ’™
πŸ’ "I believe in you... and I believe in treats." πŸͺπŸ˜‚

As we wrap up our first week of summer sessions, we're so proud of our riders, caregivers, parents, volunteers, instructors, therapists, and horses. Thank you for being part of The Saddle Light Center family and helping make this first week back such a success! πŸ’™πŸ΄

Now let's finish the week strong and head into the weekend with a smile. β˜€οΈ

πŸ’¬ What treat do you think Magoo & Trooper would choose? They both love their treats!

πŸ₯• Carrot

πŸŽ‰πŸ΄ Last month, The Saddle Light Center held its annual raffle drawing, and we recently received these wonderful photos from our Grand Prize winner!

We love seeing our winners enjoying their prizes, and these photos certainly brought smiles to our faces. Even better, they feature one of our Tuesday riders sharing in the excitement with his grandpa, the winner of the grand prize πŸ†.

Moments like these remind us what a special community we have here at The Saddle Light Center. We hope they enjoy many wonderful adventures and memories with their new golf cart! πŸ’›

πŸ’™πŸ΄ Thankful Thursday πŸ΄πŸ’™

Today we're celebrating the incredible volunteers who help make The Saddle Light Center possible.

Whether they're grooming horses, leading during lessons, side walking with riders, helping around the barn, or simply offering encouragement, our volunteers make a difference every single day.

Because of you, our riders have the opportunity to build confidence, develop new skills, and experience the joy of connecting with our amazing horses.

Thank you for your time, dedication, and heart for service. We are grateful for each and every one of you! πŸ’™

🐴 Meet the Herd Monday: Schooner (Retired)

Schooner is one of our beloved retired therapy horses here at The Saddle Light Center.

Born in 1997, this handsome Palomino Quarter Horse gelding came to SLC from Austin, Texas in 2007. Before joining us, Schooner worked in a program focused on team building, emotional support, overcoming fears, improving focus, and relieving stress.

He was such a favorite that clients even sent him letters of thanks to his very own mailbox. πŸ’Œ

Schooner also became famous for his special trick β€” turning his head sideways for what we like to call β€œSchooner kisses.” Although, we suspect he was really hoping for an extra treat or two! 🍎

One of Kerstin's favorite stories about Schooner is that when he first arrived at SLC, he didn't really understand that horses were supposed to walk while carrying a rider. During the first five years of his life, Schooner's job involved standing quietly while people groomed, brushed, and interacted with him during team-building activities.

As Kerstin likes to joke, "Schooner's favorite gait is standing still." πŸ΄πŸ˜‚
It took time, patience, and training to teach him to carry a saddle and rider, but he eventually became an outstanding therapy horse and spent 17 years helping riders overcome challenges and reach their goals.

Today, Schooner enjoys retirement in his special "condo" pen near the herd, where he still receives plenty of love, treats, hugs, and visits from riders and volunteers.

He gave so much to our program β€” now it's our turn to take care of him. πŸ’™πŸ΄

✨ Join us next Monday as we conclude our Meet the Herd series by introducing our final retired herd member and celebrating the legacy of the horses who helped build The Saddle Light Center.

πŸ“Έ Do you have photos or memories of Schooner from over the years? We'd love to see them! Share your favorite pictures and/ or stories in the comments below so we can celebrate this special boy together. πŸ’™

πŸ΄β˜” Silly Friday: The Last Day of Break!

Today is the final day of our End-of-School Break, and it seems Nike and Max have very different priorities.
Nike is busy thinking about summer session starting Monday...

Meanwhile, Maxβ€”our resident mud-loving ponyβ€”is celebrating the rainy weather the best way he knows how: by dreaming about mud. πŸ€ŽπŸ˜‚

We're excited to welcome our riders, families, volunteers, and horses back for our Summer Session beginning Monday, June 8!

Until then, we'll let Max enjoy one last vacation day... and hopefully not too much mud. 🌧️🐴
