Story time:
Short Version- Chiropractic is great! Get yourself checked out.
Full Story- I had a patient come in with a complaint of discomfort in the abdomen, bloating, and constipation that had been going on for several days. The patient was admitted to the hospital and began treatments to help regulate everything. The staff told my patient they may need to stay there for the next several days and wait for the issue to resolve. My patient decided to take their treatment into their own hands and seek alternative methods of care. That's when they called me. They came into the office, and we started our consultation right away. After hearing the story, I recalled the numerous infants and toddlers I've worked on over the years with similar issues (constipation and abdominal discomfort). We discussed the sympathetic nervous system and its relationship with the musculoskeletal system, then decided to proceed with a trial of chiropractic adjustments to the lower back. This was my first adult with this type of complaint, so I was excited to start care and see what kind of results we would achieve.
The first adjustment went very well. They left the office without any increase in abdominal or lower back discomfort and even reported feeling like they could move a little easier. My patient left the office, went out to their vehicle, proceeded to leave the parking lot, but quickly turned around and came back into the office to use the restroom. Success! Their first BM in days. Our next treatment was scheduled for the following day. I anxiously awaited their arrival and report about how the rest of their day went. My patient had several bowel movements since they left and reported losing 9 lbs. in the last 24 hours! They still felt some bloating but much better than before. We had another follow-up visit a couple weeks later, and they reported complete resolution of symptoms and regular BM’s since.
Moral of the story, the body is a self-regulating and self-healing organism, and when given the right tools, it can achieve amazing things. Sometimes, it just needs a little help from your friendly neighborhood chiropractor.
Chiropractic care will never completely take the place of modern medicine, but it should definitely NOT be looked at through the old lens of pseudo-science or “quackery.”
