You know that famous saying:

โ€œPeople will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But theyโ€™ll always remember how you made them feel.โ€

Wellโ€ฆteenagers remember how you made them feel.

But letโ€™s be honest.

They also remember what you said. And what you did. ๐Ÿ˜…

They may even be keeping a tally.

The lecture in the car.

The argument over the missing assignment.

The time you lost your cool.

The moment you listened instead of fixing.

The time you apologized.

The night you stayed up because they finally decided to talk at 11:47 PM.

Itโ€™s easy to get consumed by todayโ€™s battlesโ€”the messy room, forgotten chores, eye rolls, grades, curfew.

But underneath all of those everyday interactions, youโ€™re building something much bigger:

Your future relationship with your adult child.

One day, they wonโ€™t have to tell you whatโ€™s happening in their life.

They wonโ€™t have to ask for your advice.

They wonโ€™t have to answer the phone.

You want them to choose to.

That doesnโ€™t mean avoiding boundaries or never getting it wrong. It means learning how to handle resistance, disappointment, and conflict without sacrificing the relationship in the process.

Because parenting isnโ€™t only about getting through today.

Itโ€™s about building a relationship theyโ€™ll still want decades from now.

Your teen is already writing the story theyโ€™ll someday tell about growing up in your home.

Letโ€™s make connection a big part of that story. ๐Ÿ’›

Follow Teen Savvy Coaching for practical tools to help you navigate the messy teen years while protecting the relationship youโ€™re building for the future.

Think of your relationship like a bank account.

Every correction.

Every reminder.

Every lecture.

Every โ€œDid you finish your homework?โ€

Every โ€œHow many times do I have to ask you?โ€

Those are withdrawals.

And yesโ€”some withdrawals are necessary. Parenting teens requires boundaries, accountability, and hard conversations.

But here's the question:

Are you making enough deposits?

Because if your teen only hears from you when something is wrong, eventually they may start avoiding you.

Deposits don't have to be big.

โค๏ธ Notice something they're doing well.
๐ŸŽต Ask about the song they're listening to.
๐Ÿ˜‚ Send them something funny.
๐Ÿฆ Grab ice cream together.
๐Ÿš— Let the car ride happen without an interrogation.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Sit beside them without an agenda.

Those seemingly insignificant moments are actually doing important work.

They're building trust.

They're reminding your teen:

โ€œI enjoy youโ€”not just when you're succeeding. Not just when there's something to fix. Just because you're you.โ€

And that connection is what gives you the relationship capital to navigate the harder moments when they come.

So be honest...

๐Ÿ‘‡ If your teen graded your relationship bank account today, would you be in the RED or BLACK? Comment below.

Today's challenge: Have ONE interaction with your teen that has absolutely nothing to do with school, chores, behavior, or responsibilities.

No agenda. No lesson. Just connection.

Come back and tell me how it wentโ€”and follow Teen Savvy Coaching for more practical tools to help you build a relationship with your teen that lasts well beyond the teen years.

For many parents, itโ€™s:

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with my teen?โ€

But thereโ€™s a better question:

โ€œWhat might be happening with my teen?โ€

Because behavior is communication.

A teen who suddenly becomes angry, withdrawn, disorganized, unmotivated, or unusually emotional may be communicating something they donโ€™t yet know how to put into words.

Maybe theyโ€™re overwhelmed.

Maybe theyโ€™re anxious.

Maybe something changed socially.

Maybe theyโ€™re discouraged or embarrassed.

Maybe theyโ€™re struggling with something you canโ€™t see yet.

That doesnโ€™t mean we excuse disrespectful or unhealthy behavior.

It means we get curious before we correct.

Instead of immediately asking:

โ€œWhy are you acting like this?โ€

Try:

โ€œIโ€™ve noticed you havenโ€™t seemed like yourself lately. Is something making things harder right now?โ€

That shift matters.

Because curiosity says, โ€œI want to understand you.โ€

Judgment says, โ€œThereโ€™s something wrong with you.โ€

And those two messages lead to very different conversations.

You donโ€™t have to have all the answers. Sometimes you just need to start with a better question.

๐Ÿ’ฌ The questions you ask your teen shape the relationship you build with them.

If youโ€™re ready to stop guessing and start having conversations that actually lead somewhere, follow me for weekly parenting tools.

My favorite line from this week's episode on the rise of e-bikes wasnโ€™t about e-bikes at all.
It was this:
โœจChild development hasn't changed just because technology has. โœจ

As parents, it's easy to feel pressure to keep up with every new trend.
"If everyone else has one..."
"All my friends are doing it..."

We've all heard those words.

But our job isn't to parent according to trends.

Our job is to parent according to what our individual child is ready for.
That takes courage.
It takes wisdom.
And sometimes it means saying "not yet"...or even just โ€œnoโ€.

Your kids may not thank you today...
But one day they probably will.

Another great call in that Teen Savvy Parent Hub

08/10/2026

Just because our kids can...doesn't always mean they should.

That was the heart of this week's Parenting Shrink Wrapped conversation.
Melissa and I talked about the summerโ€™s most controversial form of transportation: e-bikes.

And we have some things to say on the matter.
And also, this episode isn't really JUST about e-bikes.
It's also about something bigger.
Technology changes. Child development doesn't.

Our middle schoolers and early teens still have developing brains. Their judgment, impulse control, and ability to assess risk are still growing, even if the latest technology says they're ready for more.

As parents, we're constantly asking:
๐Ÿ’› Is my child ready for this responsibility?
๐Ÿ’› Have they demonstrated good judgment?
๐Ÿ’› Am I preparing them for independence or just giving them access?

Those questions apply to phones, social media, driving, dating...and yes, e-bikes too.

Sometimes the most loving answer is "not yetโ€ or even just plan โ€œnoโ€.

When our teens make poor choices, our instinct is to tighten the reins.

Another reminder.

Another consequence.

Another lecture.

Another rule.

It comes from love. We want to protect them from making mistakes.

But here's the shift:

Our job isn't to control every choice our teen makes.

Our job is to help them learn to make better choices.

Those are two very different goals.

Control depends on you.

Responsibility develops within them.

Whenever it's safe, let natural or logical consequences do some of the teaching.

Forgot their sports equipment? They may have to sit out.

Waited until the last minute to start a project? They may earn a lower grade.

Had an argument with a friend? Now they have an opportunity to repair the relationship.

Those moments are uncomfortableโ€”but discomfort is often where growth begins.

Instead of asking:

"How do I make sure this never happens again?"

Try asking:

"What can my teen learn from this experience?"

That question shifts you from controlling to coaching.

Because our goal isn't to raise teens who only make good choices when we're watching.

It's to raise adults who know how to make good choices when we're not.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What's one lesson your teen learned by experiencing a natural consequence instead of another lecture? Share your story belowโ€”it may encourage another parent.

If you're looking for practical tools to build responsibility without constant power struggles, DM me "LOVED" and I'll send you my free video guide on handling tough conversations with your teen.

Parents often tell me,

"We've had this conversation a hundred times."

And I believe them.

But here's the thing...

Talking isn't the same as connecting.

Sometimes we're so focused on getting our point across that we never stop to understand what our teen is experiencing.

And when teens don't feel understood, they stop listening.

Not because they don't care.

Because their brain has shifted into defense mode.

One question can completely change the direction of the conversation:

"What does this feel like from your perspective?"

Then do something that's surprisingly hard...

Be quiet.

Don't interrupt.

Don't correct.

Don't defend yourself.

Don't start planning your response.

Just listen.

Listening doesn't mean you agree with everything your teen says.

It means you're communicating:

"Your perspective matters."

And when teens feel heard, something powerful happens.

Their defenses come down.

They're far more willing to hear your perspective.

That's where influence begins.

Connection doesn't eliminate conflict.

But it transforms how you move through it together.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Here's your challenge: Tonight, ask your teen one question:

"What does this feel like from your perspective?"

Then come back and tell me what happened. I'd love to hear how the conversation changed.

And if you're looking for practical, science-backed tools to have calmer, more productive conversations with your teen, follow Teen Savvy Coaching. Every week I share strategies that help parents build connection without giving up healthy boundaries.

The goal isn't raising an obedient teenager. It's raising a responsible adult.

And those are two very different goals.

If your goal is obedience, you'll measure success by questions like:

โœ”๏ธ Did they listen?
โœ”๏ธ Did they follow directions?
โœ”๏ธ Did they do what I asked?

But here's the problem...

Obedience has an expiration date.

One day your teen will leave home.

They'll make decisions without you.

They won't have you reminding them, correcting them, or setting the rules.

What they'll need instead is:

๐Ÿ‘‰ good judgment
๐Ÿ‘‰ self-control
๐Ÿ‘‰ problem-solving
๐Ÿ‘‰ integrity
๐Ÿ‘‰ the confidence to make wise choices on their own

Those skills aren't built through constant control.

They're built by giving teens opportunities to think, struggle, make mistakes, repair, and learn.

That's why parenting for responsibility is so much messier than parenting for compliance.

It requires us to ask more questions and give fewer immediate answers.

Instead of:

"Because I said so."

Try:

"What do you think the responsible next step is?"

Or...

"How do you want to handle this?"

Every conversation is an opportunity to help your teen strengthen the internal voice they'll rely on long after yours isn't in the room.

Because one day, your teen won't need your permission.

They'll need their own judgment.

And that's the voice we're trying to build.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Comment "RESPONSIBILITY" if you're parenting for adulthoodโ€”not just obedience.

And if you're looking for practical, brain-based parenting strategies that help you raise capable, confident young adults, follow Teen Savvy Coaching. Every week I share tools that make the teen years a little less overwhelming and a lot more connected.

Sometimes the best parenting advice comes from the kid.

This week on the podcast, we sat down with 19-year-old Tilghman Grim to hear what it was really like growing up with divorced parents and ADHD. His honesty, humility, and wisdom left a lasting impression on me.

When I asked him what advice he had for parents who are co-parenting, he didn't hesitate:
"Co-parenting is not a competition."

That one sentence says so much.

Our kids don't need us trying to outdo each other. They don't need bigger gifts, better vacations, or looser rules. They need to know they're loved, supported, and free to have healthy relationships with both parents.

Another gem from Tilghman: "Nobody is perfect."

As parents, we spend so much time worrying about getting everything right. But maybe our kids don't need perfection nearly as much as they need consistency, grace, and parents who keep showing up.

This conversation reminded me that even when life doesn't go according to plan, children can grow into resilient, thoughtful adults when they know they're deeply loved.

What's one lesson your child has taught you recently?
