šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø Community matters.

One of our favorite traditions each summer is walking in the Severna Park 4th of July Parade. It’s a chance to celebrate our country, our hometown, and the incredible families who make Peake what it is.

The best part isn’t the decorations or the parade route—it’s seeing our clients, families, staff, and friends walking together, waving to neighbors, and sharing in something bigger than ourselves.

At Peake, we believe communication builds connection… and connection builds community. ā¤ļø

Thank you to everyone who walked with us, cheered us on, or simply waved as we passed by. We love being part of this community.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at Peake! šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

šŸ“ We’re taking therapy to the pickleball court this summer!

I’m excited to share a new collaboration between Peake Speech Therapy & Consulting and The Putaway!

This summer, some of our students are doing something a little different.

Each week, we meet in the office to build executive function and social communication skills. Then, with the help of Coach Lynn at The Putaway, we take those same skills onto the pickleball court to practice them in a real-world setting.

Because social communication isn’t just about learning strategies at a table—it’s about using those skills with real people.

On the court, our students are learning to:
• Work with a partner
• Encourage teammates
• Solve problems in the moment
• Read social cues
• Navigate wins and losses with flexibility
• Most importantly…have fun while building meaningful relationships.

A huge thank you to Coach Lynn and The Putaway for partnering with us and embracing this vision. We are so excited to give our students an opportunity to grow in a setting that is active, engaging, and full of authentic social opportunities.

The therapy room is where we learn the skills. The community is where those skills come to life. šŸ’™

Sometimes a children’s movie says exactly what we’re all thinking. ā¤ļø

One of my favorite moments in Toy Story 5 came when Jessie looked around and said,

ā€œHow is Emily going to make friends if they’re not even looking at each other?ā€

That line hit me.

At Peake, we spend a lot of time helping children learn something that’s becoming increasingly difficult—how to play. Not with screens, but with toys, imagination, conversation, and each other.

Play is where language grows. It’s where social communication develops. It’s where friendships begin.

That’s why our sessions are filled with games, pretend play, books, and face-to-face interaction. Those moments teach children how to connect, communicate, and build meaningful relationships.

Jessie got it right.

Kids don’t just need more entertainment. They need more opportunities to look up, play together, and connect. ā¤ļø

šŸ“š Peake’s Good Book Recommendation

This week, a friend reached out asking, ā€œA family I know just received an autism diagnosis. Do you have any resources you’d recommend?ā€

Without hesitation, one of the first books that came to mind was TalkAbility by Fern Sussman.

Receiving an autism diagnosis can feel overwhelming. Families are often searching for practical guidance on what to do next. TalkAbility offers exactly that—evidence-based strategies that parents can begin using during everyday interactions to support communication, social engagement, and connection.

One of my favorite aspects of this book is that it focuses on helping children become active participants in conversations and relationships, not just teaching language in isolation.

If you’re a parent, grandparent, educator, or therapist supporting a verbal child on the autism spectrum, this is a resource that’s well worth adding to your bookshelf.

Have you read TalkAbility? I’d love to hear what you think.

šŸ“šāž”ļøā˜€ļø Another school year in the books!

This year brought new skills, new friendships, hard work, perseverance, and so much growth. We are incredibly grateful to be part of so many journeys.

As we celebrate the end of the school year, Peake will also be taking a brief pause from June 15–20 to recharge before an exciting summer ahead.

Thank you for trusting us with your children. Have a wonderful first week of summer! šŸ’™

šŸ»šŸŽ‰ Bear Can’t Wait is one of our favorite guided book shares!

This story gives our learners opportunities to practice sequencing, predicting, problem-solving, and social thinking as Bear prepares a surprise party for his friend Rabbit.

With interactive props and hands-on experiences, we help transform words on a page into meaningful learning opportunities.

Because when stories become experiences, language comes alive. šŸ’™

To the moms who show up every day with strength, patience, and unwavering love — we see you.

Being a mother of a child with special needs carries a weight that many will never fully understand. And yet, day after day, you continue to pour yourselves out for your children with courage and grace.

Watching our Peake moms walk through our doors each day — advocating, encouraging, supporting, and loving so deeply — is nothing short of inspiring.

Today, we celebrate you.Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Peake. šŸ’™
