Are you ready to simplify your interactions with children? Look no further than our Child-Adult Relationship Enhancement (CARE) Workshop!

What Is CARE? CARE isn’t therapy—it’s a dynamic, informative, and engaging set of skills for adults who interact with children and teens.

Who Can Benefit? CARE suits a diverse range of roles:
Parents and Foster parents
- Clinicians
- Receptionists
- Preschool teachers
- Daycare providers
- Medical professionals

Hands-On Techniques The CARE workshop provides adults with practical and effective techniques for building positive connections with children and teens:
- 3 P’s: Master the art of Praise, Paraphrase, and Point Out to connect with kids.
- Effective Commands: Learn how to make compliance and following directions easier for children and teens.
- Selective Ignoring: Redirect problematic behaviors with finesse.

Act 48 Hours for Educators Calling all educators! Attend our CARE Workshop and earn Act 48 hours. Here’s what you need to know:
- Bring Your PPID: Don’t forget your Professional Personnel Identification number for record-keeping.

Board Member Spotlight: Tom Hay

What happens when a passion for helping children meets a deep commitment to the local community? For board member Tom Hay, it meant finding a meaningful way to support Laughlin Children’s Center. Tom was a driving force behind the inaugural Sewickley Classic 5K this past April, helping bring the event to life and raise proceeds to support Laughlin’s services for children and families. Now, Tom takes us behind the scenes to share a little more about his life, his connection to the community, and who he is outside of Laughlin.

"My wife, Janice, is a speech language pathologist who works with children, so I understand the importance of that work and the importance of what Laughlin does for the children in our community. I viewed joining the Laughlin Board as a great opportunity to help an amazing local non-profit organization with a mission that I believe in."

Outside of his role as a board member Tom is a partner at Troutman Pepper Locke, where he focuses on complex insurance coverage disputes.

"I have a twelve-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son, so my wife and I spend a lot of our free time with them and on their various activities! Beyond that, I like to stay active. I am an avid runner and am currently training for my first marathon. I really enjoy all racquet sports and I captain one of the paddle tennis teams at the Edgeworth Club. I also am in a men’s book club and am a member of a local Sewickley dad’s ping-pong league!"

We’re grateful for the time, expertise, and heart our board members bring to Laughlin and to the children and families we serve. Thank you, Tom, for helping make our mission possible!

Helping Children with ADHD Thrive: Strategies and Tools for Parents and Caregivers

This session dives into how ADHD affects attention, organization, planning, emotional regulation, and task completion, and gives parents practical tools to help your child build confidence, independence, and success at home and at school.

Sometimes, the most important conversation about a child's needs at school happens around a table.

A parent brings what they see at home.
A teacher brings what they see in the classroom.
A clinician brings their expertise.
And the child’s needs are at the center of it all.

But bringing all of those perspectives together isn’t always easy. Different experiences, priorities, and communication styles can make collaboration feel overwhelming.

That’s why Laughlin Children’s Center is partnering with the PEAL (Parent Education and Advocacy Leadership) Center for Collaborating on School Teams in Ways That Make a Difference.

Join us for an interactive evening focused on practical communication and teamwork skills that can help families, educators, clinicians, and community members work together, make sure every voice is heard, and support positive outcomes for students.

What might learning look and feel like through the eyes of a child with dyslexia?

Hosted by Laughlin Children’s Center and presented by Pennsylvania Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (PBIDA), Experience Dyslexia: A Simulation, is an interactive, hands-on experience designed to build understanding, empathy, and awareness of the challenges many children with dyslexia may experience while learning.

This simulation offers participants an opportunity to gain a new perspective on dyslexia and recognize the strengths and unique ways children learn.
