Partner Highlight: Building Resilience Beyond the School Day:

This summer, more than 60 KidStop staff with the Sheboygan Community Recreation Department were trained in Mental Health America Lakeshore's Resilient Classroom Project (RCP) and are now implementing the curriculum across all seven KidStop sites. By integrating social-emotional learning into before- and after-school programming, children have additional opportunities to strengthen emotional regulation, resilience, and healthy relationships in a safe and supportive environment.

This initiative is made possible through our valued partnership with Hospital Sisters Health System helping expand evidence-based mental health programming for youth throughout our community. *Shoutout to Recreation Supervisor Stacy Hayon for being a strong advocate for social-emotional learning in KidStop! Your leadership is making a difference.

Highlight in our July newsletter: Year One: Roots and Wings Middle School Program

This spring, Mental Health America Lakeshore successfully completed the inaugural pilot year of Roots & Wings, our evidence-based middle school restorative circles program, made possible through the generous support of the Wm. Collins Kohler Foundation.

What began with an anticipated 2–3 pilot classrooms quickly grew to 10 classrooms across three school districts, including five classrooms in New Holstein, three in Oostburg, and two in Plymouth. Together, students participated in guided restorative circles that strengthened relationships, emotional awareness, empathy, and a sense of belonging within their classrooms.

The impact has been remarkable. Following the program:
92% of students reported feeling more connected to their class.
88% learned strategies to better manage their emotions.
85% felt better equipped to resolve conflicts.
90% said they would recommend Roots & Wings to other students.

Educators also shared that students built authentic relationships, developed greater empathy, and created stronger classroom communities. Many observed students forming new friendships and engaging with classmates they had never spoken to before. Students echoed these experiences, sharing that they learned not to judge others, recognized that everyone carries unseen struggles, and felt more connected to their peers.

We are excited to launch Year Two this fall with expanded support from the Wisconsin Partnership Program, allowing us to reach even more middle school students across our region. Together with the Wm. Collins Kohler Foundation, these investments are helping create school communities where every student feels seen, connected, and empowered to thrive. *Picture: Oostburg Middle School. Fun fact: Oostburg School District is the first district to have our K-12 programming across all grade levels! 💚🎉
