What does a torn meniscus mean for an athlete’s recovery?

In this week’s Injury Update, Dr. David Marsh discusses Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers’ right knee injury, explains the role of the meniscus and breaks down how recovery can differ depending on whether the damaged tissue is trimmed or repaired.

While a minor procedure may allow an athlete to return within four to six weeks, a full meniscus repair can require four to six months of rehabilitation. Preserving the meniscus whenever possible can also help protect the knee’s long-term health.

Legs that feel weak on a walk. Numbness in your thighs or calves that eases when you sit down. A nagging sense of imbalance. These are classic signs of spinal stenosis, a condition where the spaces inside your spine narrow and press on surrounding nerves.

Could Aging Be Behind Your Back Pain?

Spinal stenosis is one of the most common causes of back and leg pain in adults over 50, and aging is the main reason why. Over time, discs in the spine can bulge, ligaments thicken, and bone spurs develop around the joints. All of these changes gradually crowd the nerves that run through your spinal canal, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness in your legs, buttocks, or arms.

The good news is that spinal stenosis is rarely an emergency. Many people manage it well with physical therapy, injections, or simple activity adjustments.

What's Actually Happening When a Disc "Herniates"?

Your spine is cushioned by discs that act like shock absorbers between each vertebra. When one of those discs ruptures, its soft inner material can leak out and press on nearby nerves. That pressure is what causes the burning, radiating pain that travels down your arm or leg, not just the back itself.

About one in four people with back pain has a herniated disc. The good news is that most cases improve without surgery, through physical therapy, injections, chiropractic care, or simply allowing the body time to heal. What Is a Herniated Disc?

If you have low-back pain shooting down a leg, or neck pain with numbness spreading into your arm, a herniated disc may be the cause.

Your spinal discs act as shock absorbers between the bones of your spine. When one ruptures, the soft filling inside can press on nearby nerves, creating pain, weakness, or tingling far from where the injury actually is.

The encouraging part: the majority of herniated discs improve without surgery, through physical therapy, injections, chiropractic care, and other conservative treatments. When surgery is the right call, minimally invasive options like microdiscectomy can bring rapid relief and a faster return to daily life.
