A friendly business across the street is Molly Cantor Pottery. Wonderful wonderful you can discover in Shelburne Falls.

Molly's pots are meticulously crafted, either spun on the traditional potter’s wheel or painstakingly assembled from thin slabs of clay she rolls by hand. Once a form has achieved its desired shape, she adorns it with a delicate layer of colored clay, enhancing the original porcelain. This colorful coating serves as a canvas upon which she carves intricate designs, achieving an effect akin to a block print. Each piece boasts an original, hand-carved drawing, lending to its unique character.

Once her artwork has been illustrated, she carefully glazes each item, providing it with a durable, glossy finish. The pieces are then fired in an electric kiln, tucked away in the corner of her art-filled studio. The heat hardens and finalizes her creations, converting them from fragile clay forms into sturdy, functional pottery.

In addition to the electric kiln, she occasionally employs a more traditional wood-fired kiln. This method is thrilling and labor-intensive, with the entire process demanding many hours of stoking the kiln and consuming a cord or more of wood. Despite its effortful nature, this technique offers a distinctive finish to her ceramics, which she finds immeasurably satisfying.
