When a child is struggling with reading, it’s important to look at the whole picture. Dyslexia is not caused by a vision problem, but some children with dyslexia may also experience functional vision difficulties that can make reading feel even more challenging. At Great Lakes Vision Rehabilitation, we take the time to understand each child’s unique visual needs and identify whether functional vision may be playing a role.

We encourage you to visit our website, where you’ll find research on vision and learning, information about the services and technology available in our office, and the many ways we support patients of ALL ages with a wide range of visual challenges. Visit us at www.excelvisiontherapy.com

Sometimes parents notice that their child knows a word one day and struggles with it the next. Or they may misread words in ways that do not seem to match their intelligence. If letter reversals, misreading similar words, losing place, slow fluency, or visual fatigue are issues your child is struggling with, we’ll explain how some vision-related symptoms can overlap with reading challenges.

On Thursday, September 17th we are hosting a free webinar where we’ll discuss the visual skills needed for reading and how issues with tracking, focusing, teaming, or processing can make words harder to manage.

This one-hour informational webinar will help educate parents, especially those who homeschool, how vision challenges can affect reading, writing, focus, schoolwork, and confidence.

Great Lakes Vision Rehabilitation is excited to introduce our upcoming free webinar, What Homeschool Parents Should Know About Vision & Learning.

This one-hour educational event was created to help homeschool parents better understand how vision may affect a child’s reading, attention, schoolwork, confidence, and overall learning experience. Because 20/20 eyesight is not the whole story, we will discuss how other visual skills can influence the way a child tracks words, maintains focus, processes information, and completes academic tasks.

Although this webinar was designed with homeschool families in mind, the information can be valuable for parents of all school-aged children, including those attending public or private school. Tutors, teachers, educators, and other professionals who work closely with students are also encouraged to attend.

Our goal is to help families recognize possible signs of a vision-related challenge, better understand how vision can sometimes contribute to learning difficulties, and learn what options may be available when additional support is needed.

✨ This is a free, one-hour online educational event.

August is Children’s Vision and Learning Month—a time dedicated to raising awareness about vision challenges that may go undetected or be mistaken for attention, reading, or learning difficulties.

Clear eyesight is only one part of how a child uses vision. The ability to focus, track words across a page, process visual information, and coordinate the eyes can all play an important role in reading, schoolwork, sports, and confidence. These challenges do not simply disappear with time, but with the right evaluation and care, many visual skills can be strengthened.

Great Lakes Vision Rehabilitation will be hosting a free educational webinar about vision and learning. While the event was created with homeschool families in mind, the information can also be very valuable for parents of children attending traditional schools, as well as teachers, tutors, educators, and others who work closely with students.

We will be sharing more details very soon—so stay tuned!!

August is Children's Vision & Learning Month!

**Is it "just a bad day at school," or could it be a vision problem?**

Sometimes the signs of a vision problem aren't obvious. A child can see the board just fine and still struggle with the visual skills needed for reading, writing, and learning.

Watch for these commonly overlooked signs:

✅ Losing their place while reading
✅ Avoiding drawing, reading, or other close-up work
✅ Excessive blinking or rubbing their eyes
✅ Complaining of headaches after school
✅ Reversing letters or confusing similar-looking words

These behaviors are often dismissed as a lack of focus or motivation, but they can also signal an underlying functional vision problem that deserves a closer look.

During **Children's Vision & Learning Month**, we encourage families to learn more about how vision affects success in the classroom. Early recognition of these signs can make a meaningful difference in a child's confidence, learning, and quality of life.

Have you noticed any of these signs in your child? We'd love to hear your experience in the comments. Sharing your story may help another family recognize the signs and seek the care they need.

TESTIMONIAL TUESDAY!
POTS is often associated with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, lightheadedness, brain fog, and blurred or tunnel vision—but sometimes, more than one condition may be contributing to how a patient feels. Research recognizes that visual symptoms can occur with POTS, while problems with eye coordination, focusing, or binocular vision may create an additional layer of difficulty for certain patients.

For this patient, a comprehensive functional vision evaluation identified binocular vision dysfunction as one piece of the overall picture. After being prescribed individualized prism lenses, they reported significant improvement in motion sickness, dizziness, nausea, and headaches. Although vision treatment does not treat or cure POTS itself, identifying and addressing a coexisting vision problem may help reduce symptoms that are being aggravated by the visual system. This patient’s experience is a powerful reminder that when symptoms overlap, looking beyond standard eyesight and evaluating how the eyes work together can make an important difference.

At Great Lakes Vision Rehabilitation, we understand that every patient’s symptoms, challenges, and goals are unique. We take the time to listen, look at the full picture, and provide the individualized care our clinic is known for. Our doctors work closely with each patient to better understand how vision may be affecting their daily life and develop recommendations based on their specific needs—NOT a one-size-fits-all approach.

Could vision be affecting the way your child learns? 👀📚

Great Lakes Vision Rehabilitation is hosting a FREE Vision & Learning Webinar for homeschool parents on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 2:00–3:00 PM. This online event is designed to help parents better understand the important connection between vision, reading, attention, comprehension, and learning — and why seeing 20/20 does not always mean a child has all of the visual skills needed for schoolwork.

While this webinar is especially designed with homeschool families in mind, the information can also be valuable for educators, teachers, tutors, and parents who work closely with their child when it comes to academics. Anyone looking to better understand how vision may influence reading, classroom performance, attention, and learning is welcome to attend.

Parents and educators will learn more about signs that may indicate a vision-related learning difficulty, including trouble with reading, losing place on the page, eye fatigue, headaches, difficulty concentrating on close work, or avoiding reading altogether. Our goal is to provide practical information that can help families and educators better recognize when vision may be contributing to learning challenges and understand when a more comprehensive vision evaluation may be helpful.

The webinar is completely FREE, but registration is required. Learn more about the event and reserve your spot here:
