Medication Spotlight: Propofol (Diprivan®)

Nicknamed the “milk of amnesia” because of its white appearance, Propofol is one of the most commonly used medications in modern anesthesia.

Here’s what it does:

✅ Helps patients fall asleep quickly for surgery or procedures
✅ Allows for a smooth, comfortable induction of anesthesia
✅ Wears off rapidly, helping many patients wake up sooner after surgery
✅ Is carefully dosed and continuously monitored by your anesthesia provider

Although it works within seconds, Propofol is much more than a “sleep medicine.” While you’re under anesthesia, your anesthesia provider continuously monitors your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and many other vital functions to keep you safe throughout your procedure.

Every medication we administer is chosen based on your individual health, medical history, and the type of procedure you’re having.

At Galion Anesthesia Services, patient safety is our highest priority—before, during, and after every anesthetic.

Ohio has reached an important milestone in healthcare delivery.

With Governor Mike DeWine’s submission of Ohio’s CMS opt-out request, Ohio is now a CMS opt-out state for CRNA physician supervision requirements, aligning federal reimbursement policy with recent changes in Ohio law.

This is more than a regulatory update—it creates new opportunities to improve access to anesthesia services, particularly in rural and underserved communities where recruiting anesthesia providers can be challenging.

As healthcare systems continue to navigate workforce shortages, increasing surgical demand, and financial pressures, expanding flexibility in anesthesia care models can help hospitals maintain access while continuing to prioritize patient safety and quality.

It will be interesting to see how Ohio hospitals leverage this change over the coming years.

CRNAs administer approximately 50 million anesthetics in the United States every year.

Fifty. Million.

That's every kind of procedure, every kind of patient, every kind of setting—from major academic centers to rural critical access hospitals to military operating rooms overseas.

When people ask what CRNAs do, this is the answer. We don't supplement anesthesia care in this country. We deliver it.

💉 Medication Spotlight: Midazolam (Versed®) 💉

Many patients feel nervous before surgery—and that’s completely normal.

One medication anesthesia providers commonly use to help patients feel more relaxed before a procedure is Midazolam, often known by the brand name Versed®.

✅ Helps reduce anxiety before surgery
✅ Produces a calming, relaxing effect
✅ May cause temporary memory loss of events immediately before the procedure
✅ Works quickly and is carefully dosed based on each patient’s needs

Patients often tell us they remember feeling anxious one moment and then waking up comfortably in recovery after their procedure.

While Midazolam is a valuable tool, not every patient receives it. Your anesthesia provider carefully evaluates your medical history, medications, age, and procedure to determine the safest anesthesia plan for you.

At Galion Anesthesia Services, patient safety and comfort are always our top priorities.

Have questions about anesthesia before an upcoming procedure? Ask your anesthesia provider—we’re here to help.

This little bottle helps start anesthesia in seconds.

Propofol (Diprivan) is one of the most common medications used to help patients drift off to sleep for surgery under general anesthesia.

After you’re asleep, your anesthesia provider carefully keeps you at the right depth of anesthesia using IV medications, anesthetic gas, or both—while monitoring you every step of the way.

At Galion Anesthesia, patient safety and comfort are always our priority.
